Im not sure if anyone tried this yet but tonite I ran an SD-1 in front of the head with the crunch channel gain at like 10' O clock and the tone sounded tight as hell, it killed a bit of the low end and warmth but then I dialed it back in with the EQ, I also use a GE-7 in the loop. Anyway the SD-1 made the head sound extrememly tight and clear, almost like I had a maple fretboard on my guitar if that makes any sense, really dug it, and OHH the key is to have the gain on the SD-1 to 1 or less than one, put the tone and levels at noon and have the gain almost off, sounded incredible tonite at snitch in NYC, anyone try this yet?

I was really interested in trying a Bad Monkey in front of mine but I got talked out of it. Maybe I'll have to give it a whirl afterall.

Well M-III, I still am a JSX fan. the leads are more liquidy-smooth on the JSX, but I can get very close to that with the XXX. There's just that effortless low end Nickleback/Metallica/metal type thump or chug that the XXX has that the JSX doesn't. The JSX is more "refined." Plus the XXX has more gain (although I've never gone past noon with the gain). Being female, I have a lighter touch than most guys - most girls hands aren't as strong as a guys hands, so I have always needed a touch more gain for leads. I'd say the gain on noon on the crunch and ultra channels of the XXX are where the JSX would be on 7 or 8. For classic rock/blues rythym and leads, the JSX is great. But my band does harder stuff and I just missed that sound the XXX does. If they ever make the JSX in a lower watt head, I would probably get one for more rock/blues oriented stuff.

My friend who wants the JSX is more of a classic rock person. He plays in classic rock bands and its perfect for him.

I'm happy this thing is still going. As far as the post about the JSX being more articulate I don't think I agree with that as the XXX is one of the more clear and tight sounding amps out there if you know how to set it up, the JSX is definitely smoother though. One thing is that on that link earlier on here the crunch and ultra channel volumes do effect the other channel and I didn't realize that till I read that on Thursday. I have a gig tonight and can't wait to fire up my little friend again, also my band is getting a website done in the next week or two (hopefully) so I will finally be able to put some clips up for you guys to check out. I think I got a really good tone on the album and it's a good representation of what a XXX and a 5150II can do together!

Wow! Cool thread.

I love my triple xxx. I prefer the 6L6's as well, especially the Ruby's that I have in there now. I put a 12dw7 in v2 to make the gain more useable, but I also put a 12at7 in v1 which also seemed to help the gain a bit while also making the clean channel a little warmer. I also did a faceplate mod with diamond tread. I can't stand the trucker girls.

All in all, fantastic amp!

That's pretty much the assessment that I have from the two amps.

But I don't think a lower wattage JSX would really benefit a ton.....on modern high gain amps the power tubes dont' really break up....they just seem to warm the signal coming in....I think if you pulled two power tubes it would bring it to 60 watts and that should help some but you could still get pretty darn high volume.

Glue it or screw it... Drill two hole on the faceplate and attach the logo, or just buy superglue...

and also.... I can see that there are actually pre-drilled holes on the faceplate! :S just use the screws and screw the logo on! it's not hard you know... biggrin.gif

I want to do that to my amp but I'm scared I'm going to screw the logo up when I'm cutting it out. I really wish you could buy a detached logo somewhere!

One another note, the trucker chicks are growing on me the longer I have the amp.

The Triple XXX logo is part of the stock plate, it doesn't just screw right off. It needs to be cut. I already have the screws in the right spots to put the logo on the diamondplate, I wanted to know which tools Ranalli.....err MIII used to get the logo off the stock plate. Also, if he glued the logo onto the diamondplate or just screwed it on so it could be used back on the stock plate.

Ok well I have the Super 40 Combo so maybe i'm a jr XXX owner...lol.

I had two, one was an EFX. It had JJEL34's and JJ high gain 12ax7's. Didn't sound too bad at all.

The one I still have has stock tubes and surprisingly they sound great. The stock ones in the EFX sounded like poo.

I'm starting to like them again myself. I was thinking I wanted to replace them but from a few feet away I think it looks pretty sweet.

Hey Crusher! smile.gif I bought a pair of tin snips from Home Depot and VERY CAREFULLY cut the logo out from the original Triple XXX faceplate. With the logo "detached" I merely just screwed it back in place with the two screws that hold the center of the plate in place.

With that said, you might want to cut the diamond plate out where you can see the logo through the diamondplate as with one example I have already seen. Those damn original Triple XXX faceplates are expensive, Kungfooporn reports that Peavey wants over 200 bucks for a replacement! eek.gif (sadly I have already butchered mine, but oh well... I don't care anymore with the new look! biggrin.gif )

Alright, I'm finally going to be able to afford a mic cable tomorrow (yes, I've been that broke) and record some clips! They're just going to be isolated, dry clips as many have requested. Some with one guitar track and some double layered and panned. Any requests?
