The picture of Pres. Eisenhower as Cheshire Cat illustrates an article by Murray Kempton in the Sept. 1967 issue of 'Esquire' Magazine. The author argues that he was an exceptionally complicated man who was talented at acting like an uncomplicated man. This was early evidence of reevaluation of Ike as a great leader - the literature making this positive case has grown enormously over the years. In 'Alice in Wonderland' the Cat is distracting, entertaining, baffling and indirectly a source of support for good Alice. Kempton argued Eisenhower was enormously cunning, calculating - and successful, both in winning the war and keeping the peace and prosperity of the '50's, without disaster or scandal. Eisenhower himself was an excellent writer, and his books are worth reading, especially 'Crusade in Europe.' Art Cyr
