OM trials at Gryphon

Took a trip to Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA recently.

Was looking at small body (read: OM) guitars. I played many (Goodall, Martin, H & D, SGCC, etc...)

The two I was mostly concerned about after I left were the Martin OM-28V, and the SGCC OM. I wondered about peoples opinions here. The tone of the Martin simply won the prize, but I'm not sure I can adjust to the neck profile (kinda V shaped, but I'm not sure they'd call it that). The SGCC was a beauty. Lightweight with great sustain, but maybe not quite the tonal equal of the Martin.

I think I lean toward the Martin, any opinions??

Well, you might get used to the V-ish neck shape before you know it. It's less likely you'd get used to knowing the one you didn't get had "the tone". Gryphon is one of the things I miss the most since moving from SF... great store. If it really gets down to the wire, I'd ask them to restring both, maybe offer to buy the strings if they're not so happy about it. Not knowing the age of the strings makes it hard to really compare tone sometimes. Also, was it the OMPW? Last time I was there, and since at other stores, that was the one that I kept coming back to. What a deal.

I stopped by Gryphon when I was out at MacWorld back in January. This is definitely NOT the place you want to go if you have any kind of GAS, because you are guaranteed to end up lusting after something when you leave the place. Some really, really nice guitars there!

On the OM's...I have a Martin OMC-18VLJ. It has a more rounded V neck, not a really sharp V shape. But it took me several weeks to adjust to it...especially cause I was really used to my Taylor, which is a pretty thin neck. Now, I have to say that I really like the V neck...doesn't bother me at all.

So I agree with min7b5 that you probably will adjust to the V neck just fine, and the more important thing is definitely finding an instrument that has "the tone" for you.

Maybe also having a look at Collings, because IMHO they make some outstanding OM's.
