Members lightningbug Posted April 3, 2004 Members Posted April 3, 2004 I was in the market to buy a Martin, but I ended up ordering a 2004 50th Anniversary Delux Strat instead, I just had to have it. Neadless to say, there went my Martin budget. I still needed an acoustic, but I wasn't sure what to get, until I picked up a Seagull S6 Spruce Top. I couldn't believe the tone and feel it had. I never really heard much about Seagull before. Oh, and it was under $300.00, well worth it. In my opinion, it's more guitar than the price may suggest.
Members PapaTom Posted April 3, 2004 Members Posted April 3, 2004 Good choice. Seagulls are real bargains.
Members seven7 Posted April 3, 2004 Members Posted April 3, 2004 congrats! you got a lot of guitar for the money. i like the seagulls too.
Members USian Pie Posted April 4, 2004 Members Posted April 4, 2004 IMHO, you have to go a lot more expensive to get a better sounding/playing guitar than the $300-$400 Seagulls. In fact, given a hypothetical $700 budget, I'd probably take home two Seagulls.
Members kdoggity Posted April 4, 2004 Members Posted April 4, 2004 Oh man, I absolutely love my s6 cedar. I loved it when I purchased it, and even more now that it has slighty opened up (I've owned the guitar for 3 years. Cedar opens much quicker). I, too, am amazed at how complex and beautiful the sound of seagulls are, especially at the price. A few months after I bought the guitar, I told myself I'd never sell it. After a few years, that has been cemented.
Members Nath Posted April 4, 2004 Members Posted April 4, 2004 After 3 years how is finish on the guitar? I'm wondering cause im in the market for a guitar and i wanted to know how a solid top guitar would stand against time.
Members kdoggity Posted April 4, 2004 Members Posted April 4, 2004 Bear in mind that this is in response to your question about how the finish is on my guitar. Cedar tops on seagulls come with a very light stain to begin with (no gloss), and Cedar is a soft wood. There is no question that if you play your Seagull s6 Cedar, you will scratch it. That being said, it still looks gorgeous and even smells as if it's brand new. I don't think the question is so much 'how does a solid top stand against the test of time,' but more 'how does the finish stand...' If you don't want to scratch your guitar, you're probably better off getting one with a high-gloss finish. This tends to discourage scratches, and protects the wood. Also, spruce is a tougher wood, that resists scratching more than cedar. All being said, my s6 sounds better today than it did when I bought it, and the light surface scratching has only made it look better to me.
Members lightningbug Posted April 4, 2004 Author Members Posted April 4, 2004 It was a toss up between the cedar and the spruce tops. I picked the spruce, because I prefer a little brighter sound for recording, but I also liked the full rich sound of the cedar. I'm now a big Seagull and Packer fan. Sorry about the bad humor.

Members lightningbug Posted April 4, 2004 Author Members Posted April 4, 2004 To answer Capari's quetion.... At a Local shop called Jerry's Music here in Cenral Wisconsin where I do most of my wheel'en and deal'en. They can't keep any in stock, so I had to order it. They seem to be a pretty hot selling guitar. I have to wait about 3 more weeks before I see mine, it's driving nuts. $1150.00/w case.
Members slkeen Posted April 4, 2004 Members Posted April 4, 2004 Yeah Seagull! I've had a S6+ cedar top for a year and a half and absolutely love it ! The neck is the best fit for me of ANY acoustic I've played, and the sound is sweet. I want to get the 12 string to match, they have one at the local shop and I just keep staring at it!

I've had a cedar-topped Seagull 12 string since the end of 2003. I'm very happy with it so far. The neck and wide nut is something of a tree trunk in the hand but still playable. The sound is simply great -- big, ringing, and sustaining. Here's a video of it in action. I admit it's not even "demo" quality. The particular song doesn't really highlight the guitar's strengths but it's the only recorded material I have of it so far. http://www.maiermedia.com/music/Yesterduh_12.wmv
Members lightningbug Posted April 5, 2004 Author Members Posted April 5, 2004 Yes, the semi-gloss finish does scratch easier, but a few battle scars only adds character.
Members lightningbug Posted April 5, 2004 Author Members Posted April 5, 2004 I agree, nice job ! Thanks for sharing.

I've had mine for about 3 weeks and not being a gifted player to start with it is a stretch but it sure does sound nice , now to get past C,G,D !
Members bullpencoach Posted April 5, 2004 Members Posted April 5, 2004 You can always put a bit more of a clear gloss on yourself, provided that it doesn't hamper the sound. I'm still very interested in the S6+folk, but I might hold out for a Larrivee. If there's one thing we can all say about Canada, it's some pretty good guitars...!
