Members MagicTangelo Posted April 25, 2004 Members Posted April 25, 2004 How are the Happy Traum fingerstyle videos? Are there better one's out there? Is he a good teacher and does he explain many different styles of the genre? Thanks.
Members Mike Crixell Posted April 25, 2004 Members Posted April 25, 2004 Happy Traum is a hell of a teacher, especially for beginners getting into fingerstyle. You might want to check Stefan Grossman 'cause he has a great library of artists and styles. He's also a great teacher and killer player. He told me he's never going to tour again. What a damn shame. This cat studied under Mississippi John Hurt and Rev. Gary Davis, to name but a two. Check him out, and Happy, too. Mike
Members LittleBrother Posted April 25, 2004 Members Posted April 25, 2004 I own several and he is one of the few that go into the right hand technique a little more and address the concerns of beginners. I like his videos more than almost any of them. Even by the bigger stars. Happy Traum is a nice guy too. Really humble and one time my VHS tape broke. He mailed me a new one without questions. NICE people ! His Fingerpicking Vol1 and 2 are what I think I have. Excellent for getting into the style for the first time. He hits on John Henry, Buffalo Gals and several others.
Members Unk Posted April 25, 2004 Members Posted April 25, 2004 If Happy is anything like his brother Artie I'd say his stuff has to be good. I saw Artie at a guitar clinic and he was great. I'd like the DADGAD series by Artie that I think Happy produces, but I'm waiting to find the set for less than $100. From the videos I've seen that Happy Traum has had a part of they're very good - more detailed than most. No schmoozing here, just being honest...he almost does his videos as well as LB. I particularly like instructional videos that play what they're going to teach, then break it down into pieces. The really good ones go even deeper. The great ones also show right hand technique. tips and variations.("Dirt Road Blues")
