I listened to it online live last night, and had it on again this afternoon. The interviews were interesting, but I had all Nick Drakes albums while he was still living so there was nothing new concerning his music. Still as hauntingly beautiful now as it was then. A truly unique guitarist and songwriter.

I've recently been getting into Nick Drake. So far I bought "Way to Blue" and "Pink Moon". I rather enjoy them, his music is kind of timeless really. Also if you like Nick Drake, listen to Elliot Smith who was obviously very influenced by Nick.

Unfortunately, both of their lives have ended in suicide which makes me think that they had somewhat parallel lives. Just like Jeff Buckley and his father Tim Buckley.

There was a documentary on about him on BBC4 last night called something like A Skin Too Few. I'd seen it before and have it on VHS so didn't watch it, but it was really good - interviews with his sister seemed particularly poignant.

Incidentally, whilst monkeying around in low C a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon the opening to Black Eyed Dog. I should keep working on it as it sounds GREAT!

The conclusion from the documentary I saw is that nobody actually can confirm that Nick took his own life or was just the victim of an accident. Reading between the lines though, it seems clear that it was indeed suicide - years of clinical depression is kind of a clue. Such a shame.

And he was never really appreciated during his own lifetime too.

Do you really think Tim Buckley committed suicide? I allways thought he just snorted some bad drugs that he got from a friend or something.

Its wierd how Jeff Buckley tried to avoid being like his father during his life, and ended up dying at about the same time. Freaky. When I listen to Sketches for my Sweet Heart I just wonder what some of those songs would have turned out like.

i love nick drakes songs! his guitar playing is scarily precise and his voice is stunning. i have been teaching myself his songs and i can now play about 75% of them. i read his biography and it was very interesting and helped alot in understanding the man behind the music. i believe he is a true legend.

i seriously recommend hunting down 'time of no reply' just so you can hear 'rider on the wheel' it's mind blowing. apparently another album of home recordings has just been released as well. might be worth picking up.

ps - black eyed dog is in open G with the low E tuned up to G as well :)

Elliot Smith was actually asked about the similarities of style between him and Nick Drake, and Smith claimed that he only listened to Drake a couple of times, and although he appreciated it, he didn't really think they were doing quite the same thing. I can find the quote for you if you like, but I was surprised that he wasn't really a fan of Drake. He was, however, a huge fan of the Beatles.

I love Nick Drake. Beautiful music.

OK - no flames please - but.... I just don't get the whole Nick Drake thing. I'm curious as to whether he's really all that, or simply the 'glamour of tragedy' isn't at play. I will be quite frank; Pink Moon's the only song of his I've heard, but based on that, I'd have to say that his playing was OK but his voice was more painful than 'haunting'. Please tell me what I'm missing

If you don't like it, you don't like it. There is no one music that everybody likes. People posting on this thread are big fans, but I don't think anyone here expects everyone to be. I didn't know that he killed himself until after I bought the Pink Moon album. The title track had me hooked.

Amazing Guitar PlayerSongwriter, if you dont know him you have to buy his "pink Moon" album its just a killer, he was also influenced by the blues but you can only really hear it in his bootlegs one of the best 60's folklues uk artists i know  .

i bought his new album yesterday. my expectation wasn't too high as I own all his other albums so i've heard the bedroom recording kinda stuff. how wrong i was though, it's really really good. ok so there is only 1 new song (which is pretty good, not quite the usual standard though) but the different versions of other tunes are awesome. the two that stick out for me are the solo version of Riverman, and the alternative version of Hanging on a star (which is stunning!!)

Go get it!

I never claimed Tim Buckley took his life, nor did Jeff. Just saying that they had parallel lives. Just like Elliott Smith, and Nick Drake do, because they both went through depression problems and went to clinics and rehab and stuff and just the plain style of music. Just one overdosed on perscription drugs, and the other stabbed himself in the heart with a steak knife. Although there is suspect of foul play on both sides(Elliott, and Nick).
