Tommy, Tommy, Tommy.....

Yep, Stevie was a god to Tommy, too. He's told me he admired Stevie greatly, and attributes his relatively recent discovery of the blues to him.

Tommy's not a big student of blues; when he plays bluesy stuff, he prefers a jazzy or rock take on it. But he did write the tune "Stevie's Blues" a few years ago to show his respect for the man.

Last time Tommy was in Austin, he and I were driving back from lunch in my car. He rifled through some CDs I had in the door and said, "Son House?" I asked if he'd ever heard of him. When he answered that he hadn't, I stuck it in the player. As soon as it started, he locked his full attention on the music, especially the singing. I heard him repeating Son House's guttural delivery, and I swear he was memorizing the vocal licks. When we arrived at his hotel, I asked him if he'd liked the music and he said yes. I popped the CD out, handed it to him and said, "It's yours." He was very glad to have it and he said he'd learn a lot from it. I said, "Great! Then come back and play it!" I would never put it past him to do just that, some day.

My best to all you folks who are going to spend time with Tommy in concert, in class or on recordings. Every bit of it is time well spent.

I'd love to hear Tommy try his hand at playing some Son House. I've never seen him attempt any slide work, though.

Since I gave Tommy the SH CD last October, the only sign of Son's influence I've heard in his shows has been some extra-funkified, soulful singing. Not a bad thing, either.

Is it the "Around the World" one with Richard Thompson and several others? I haven't seen that performance. Unfortunately, here in the Raleigh-Durham area it looks like WUNC is not planning to show that one until July 17.

Actually, Tommy was up in Richmond last Sunday nite with Martin Taylor but I couldn't go as I was in New England on vacation. Rotten timing! Oh well, I can't complain too much as I'll be spending a week with Tommy, John Knowles, and Mark Hanson at a guitar camp in August
;)

This one was had Tommy by himself, but in the same episode Travis Tritt and Amy Rigby(?) also performed. His part was impressive though; my wife was reading, and only half paying attention, then looked up and saw him - "Is that really only one guy doing all that!?"
