Members hawkeye21 Posted June 23, 2004 Members Posted June 23, 2004 I am considering buying a Dean Exotica Andes acoustic electric over the internet. I am just looking for any feedback on this guitar, Deans in general, or anything you have to say. Thanks.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted June 23, 2004 Members Posted June 23, 2004 My son bought a Dean Exotica, the blue one. I'm damned impressed. It's beautiful to look at. Plays nice and sounds good too. Read the reviews at HC.
Members Matt McGriff Posted June 24, 2004 Members Posted June 24, 2004 You can do better for the money, soundwise. Try the Breedlove Atlas for starters. Seagull, Blueridge.
Members UGB Posted June 24, 2004 Members Posted June 24, 2004 I think they are very hit and miss. From my experience, mostly miss, but I did play one Exotica FM that was fantastic. I've also played about 6 or 7 that were far from being fantastic. I think this is what sets some companies apart from others, consistant quality. For that price range, I'd look at Washburn and some others.
Members orsino Posted June 24, 2004 Members Posted June 24, 2004 I have to agree with Matt. I played a couple in a Fullerton, CA shop today and I was not mpressed. Played a couple of Taks that were better for the $200 or so.
Members ryanspeer Posted June 24, 2004 Members Posted June 24, 2004 I used to own a Dean Artist RSE (at least I think that was the model). Regardless, it was their top of the line model, tons of abalone adornments, solid spruce top, laminate mahogany back and sides, and a Shadow preamp. The guitar sounded alright acoustically and poor when amplified. Nothing stood out in a great way acoustically speaking. Treble was tinny, bass was muddy, mids weren't pronounced enough, etc. The Shadow preamp was horrible. Terrible terrible tone. I think they've replaced all of those in the newer models with a low-line Fishman model which would be an improvement. Still though, you can do a whole lot better with other brands. Dean attempts to make up for lack of tonal quality by throwing in extra gobs of glitz and eye-candy. It's all a matter of which is more important to you: a good LOOKING guitar, or a good SOUNDING guitar... Takamine, Seagull, Crafter, etc., all have better offerings than Dean.

It does not sound very good amplified. I agree about that. We compared my Ovation Elite sound to his Exotica. No comparison. His sounded thin& fuzzy plugged in. The Ovation sounded fineplugged in...transparent and warm.
Members hawkeye21 Posted June 25, 2004 Author Members Posted June 25, 2004 Okay, the Dean doesn't sound as appealing to me anymore. I have continued to look around and now am wondering about an Alvarez AF60CK. Your input is helping, so please continue. Any thoughts on this guitar are welcome.
Members hawkeye21 Posted June 25, 2004 Author Members Posted June 25, 2004 the model is an AD60CK instead of the AF60CK
Members FLYING V 83 Posted June 25, 2004 Members Posted June 25, 2004 I have the blue Exotica FM. Don't play much acoustic, but my wife's $100 Ibanez sounds brighter. It's a pretty blue, tho.
Members Pedro Posted June 26, 2004 Members Posted June 26, 2004 A friend of mine has the Exotica and I'm not impressed, for the money that you spend on it you can do much, much better. I don't really like the way it looks either. Just my 2 cents.
