Members jerry_picker Posted July 1, 2004 Members Posted July 1, 2004 I was cruising pawnshops and came across an Epiphone "Texan" (MIK) in blonde, very pretty and a nice-playing sweet-sounding guitar. Anyway, the dealer is selling it as mint (no tags or warrantee). Closer inspection revealed a "USED" stamped into the back of the headstock, with finish over the stamp. An even closer look found evidence of a crack at the base of the neck, about midway through the heel, that had been carefully repaired, probably at the factory. I asked the proprietor, and he freely admitted that it was a factory refurb, and that he "gets them in from time to time" from some "big outfit" he deals with. I'm guessing that this guitar may be one of those MF Refurbs. I have to say, it looked and played pretty darn good, but I am bothered by what appears to be a significant structural repair. Anyone have experience with refurbished or rebuilt guitars?
Members 54merk Posted July 1, 2004 Members Posted July 1, 2004 You're right, either a factory second or the guitar was returned back to Musicians Friend/Guitar Center [the same company]. Unless it's an out and out steal, I'd walk. They should've fixed it right by replacing the neck, but this was easier than shipping it back to Korea. If you ever want to sell this thing, lots of luck, and if it falls apart one day it may cost more to repair properly than you paid.
Members LittleBrother Posted July 1, 2004 Members Posted July 1, 2004 I agree. A minty new one is cheap in the first place so unless this thing cost practically nothing I would walk. Repairs can be just as good as new but you dont know what other stresses and mild cracking and separation might have happened. Sometimes the secondary damage can't be seen. Sounds like a return or shipping damaged. Use your best judgement which I am sure is very sound.
