As with most things in the universe, it seems to be mostly a matter of taste. I just wondered if there was an overriding reason other than aesthetics (and convenient tuning) to desire a slot head. I've heard that the less mass at the headstock, the better a guitar will sustain; this has something to do with vibrations on either side of the nut cancelling each other to varying degrees. I'm sure subtle structural variations play a part in the delicate nuance of tones, but honestly I'm too much of a caveman to be able to appreciate them at that level.
