Members frankentele Posted July 3, 2004 Members Posted July 3, 2004 If you've been following the saga (c'mon, admit it...you have) I had to send my nearly new-to-me Guild D4 off for repair of a nasty top crack right alongside the top of the fingerboard. Well, I got it back today and all I can say is "WOW!" Lemme say it again: "WOW!" Mack McCormick of Columbus, GA was the repair deity who worked this piece of magic--you can't tell there was ever a crack there. Seriously, folks. The guitar has never sounded this good, EVER (I guess that whole 'solid top' thing really DOES count for something)--nice breathy lows, good resonance, the works. If you ever need work done to your baby, see Mack. He also builds some nice instruments from what I've seen. I don't know if he ever reads message boards, but a hearty "Thank you, sir!" from a very satisfied customer.
Members UGB Posted July 3, 2004 Members Posted July 3, 2004 That's super of you to share man.I was just in Mack's shop last week and I need to take my EA17 in to have him tweak the action on it. It's cool living in the same town w/such a good repair/builder. When he's done, and he's 69, there's NO ONE in this town to take his place.
Members frankentele Posted July 3, 2004 Author Members Posted July 3, 2004 UGB, when funds allow I'm gonna buy one of his OMs...I saw a pic on some web site and read the comments of a couple of buyers--they were extremely impressed. I don't think Mack goes too much into ornamentation, he just concentrates on building solid resonant guitars.LB--if I'm able to make it to this year's Jam, you'll see it in person

Members UGB Posted July 3, 2004 Members Posted July 3, 2004 I need to play some of his guitars when I go into his shop next time; I've never played one. I'll start w/that acoustic flying V.
Members chipmonk-doug Posted July 4, 2004 Members Posted July 4, 2004 Don't let the secret out. I want him to build me at least one more and I don't want him to get too busy or raise his prices. http://www.stone-soup.com/northleft/littlemac.htm
Members UGB Posted July 4, 2004 Members Posted July 4, 2004 If you don't mind my asking, what did that run you? Love the inlays btw.
Members UGB Posted July 5, 2004 Members Posted July 5, 2004 went and saw Mack today and told him of this thread. I think it made his day.Oh, I finally played some of his guitars too. Very nice. Most had walnut in them. I saw some wood stock lying on the floor, not sure what it was though. I'd guess he has about 10 guitars ready to sell.
Members UGB Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 I was just over in the review section of HC and noticed that Mack's guitars don't have any reviews. Doug, if you could take the time that'd be cool, and if you know of any other McCormick owners that could so as well, super. Mack said he had a web site for 4 years at a cost of $100 a month and it never made him $100 in business, but he is aware that his name is brought up on the internet and that some are discovering him and his guitars.

He can have a professional site designed for a couple hundred dollars and host it for $10 or less per month. The way that a lot of guys are today they won't seriously check into a builder unless they have a web site.
Members UGB Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 I think a problem most of Mack's generation doesn't like is the interactivity of a web site. He's more than happy to talk on the phone but I doubt he'd ever check/respond to email. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

I ofered to build him a site for just the cost of hosting and couldn't get him interested. The big advantage is that we keep him a secret. doug
