Members washburntrip Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 neil young's voice is so out of tune its good. i think if uve got as distinct sort of voice thats kinda cool u can make it work.
Members Brokenwing Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 Neil's distinct alright, but he's not out of tune. A distinct vocal can take you places. An out of tune of vocal will get you barred from places.
Members kwakatak Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 hehe - ever listen to the words of "Southern Man" and "Sweet Home Alabama"?

Members J. Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 The album "Harvest" is my favorite Neil Young record. It has some classic tunes on it, like "Needle and the Damage Done" and "Old Man," among others.
Members tikabear Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 I thought "Sweet Home Al" was a reply by Skynyrd to the song "Alabama" on Harvest.
Members UGB Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 Young wrote 'Southern Man' and Skynyrd has a line in 'Sweet Home Alabama' that goes:'I hope Mr. Young will remember, a Southern man don't need him around anyhow.'To sing like Neil Young, try to sing like a small child. A small child that can't really sing that well.
Members UGB Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 btw, when he wants to, this guy can do a Neil Young that would have you believe it IS Neil Young.Eric Myers
Members LesStrater Posted July 6, 2004 Members Posted July 6, 2004 OK, so if not Neil Young, who has the worst voice in the business? I think Joe Cocker may get my vote.

Members catdaddy Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 So I guess none of you have ever heard Captain Beefheart...
Members the_schuster Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 Woah, don't be ragging on Tom Waits here
Members buddyboy Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 Maybe Neil's voice is an acquired taste, but I think he hits the notes. IMO, Bob Dylan and Dave Mathews are hard to listen to. I also have 40 Hank Williams Sr. cuts that make my dog cry... but I love the tunes. BTW PBS aired a Hank Biography last week. Looked he played a J-45 early on. Anybody see it?
Members d0zerz Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 I happen to love neil young. I play a lot of his stuff...good simple melodies. I mean it was really his songwriting that got him where he is..I doubt it was his voice or guitar playing.I haven't quite got his voice "figured out". Sometimes I listen to it and think it's wavering around the note he's trying to hit (but not like a standard vibrato)..and sometimes I think it's off. Either way it just seems to work. A lot of people can't stand him though -- I love him. Check out greendale...his newest effort. His voice has mellowed out a lot with time. It sounds a lot more rich than the choked higher voice of his earlier stuff.I think sweet home alabama was a response to southern man and alabama, hence the name I like all 3 tunes. Apparently there was a skynard show once where neil came up and sung with them
Members tikabear Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 I agree. SHA is likely a response to both of Neil's "Southern bashing" songs. My memory is vague on which is the older song; Alabama or Southern Man. I believe SHA was written in the early 70s. I used to know all this stuff until my brain was forced to acquire more "useful" information. I love Neil Young's stuff and never had to "get used to" his voice. He has an amazing volume of material that's quite varied. I have most of his CD's and bought the Rust Never Sleeps DVD which is great. I still hope to see hime live someday.
Members newsdude477 Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 Ive always been able to nail a Neil Young voice for some reason. I dont know how but whenever I sing a NY song everyone says its dead on.
Members LittleBrother Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 Listening to Neil brings back some great memories and to study him is to only appreciate him more. He is truly a pioneer of music and one of the truly original characters on the landscape. He has pioneered and influences so many styles and artists I think he is often underestimated much like Dylan and many others that get judged in part and not as a whole. Just thumbs up for Neil. You are like a Hurricane!

Members kwakatak Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 I dunno - not to knock the name or anything, but there isn't a Neil in the business that I can take seriously. Neil Sedaka? Neil Diamond? Neal Schon? Please!
Members Doolin Dalton Posted July 7, 2004 Members Posted July 7, 2004 Van Morrison is one of my favorite artists. But many people dont like his voice. But in my opinion Van is the Man!
