Members FelixCat Posted July 12, 2004 Members Posted July 12, 2004 Anyone have any experience with luthiers or repair shops in Northern VA? I'm looking for recommendations. I put a set of medium/heavy strings on one of my guitars and I noticed that the bridge now has a small gap at the base. Just want to nip it in the bud before it pulls off. In any case, I've since gone to medium strings on that guitar.
Members parrothd_mark Posted July 13, 2004 Members Posted July 13, 2004 I don't recall his name off the top of my head, but there is a very well respected Luthier in Leesburg that has done work for more than a few well known musicians. I'm sure someone will chime in here with his name. Or you might try at the Martin Guitar forum as well: http://p084.ezboard.com/btheunofficialmartinguitarforum
Members Preacher Will Posted July 13, 2004 Members Posted July 13, 2004 Felix, He's not in NoVa, but Baltimore's only about an hour away and I can strongly recommend a buddy of mine, Phil Jacoby at Philtone. It is no exaggeration to say that he's one of the better luthier/repair guys on the east coast. He's had his own shop for years after serving as PRS's in-house repair tech. A graduate of Roberto-Venn, he's equally good with an acoustic as with an electric--maybe better. He also plays a mean tele. His shop is in Federal Hill, about six blocks from the Key Highway exit off I-95. Not only is he good, he's one of the most decent people I've ever met. You can take his advice to the bank. Check out his website at www.philtone.com.

That would be Joe Latham. He does good work, and his knowledge of Martins is almost scary: I handed him my 1974 D-35 and he said "Ah, that neck was made by So-and-So, worked at Martin until [some date]. Always liked his necks." However, he's really backed up, and serious work can take quite a long time.
Members FelixCat Posted July 15, 2004 Author Members Posted July 15, 2004 That's why I like this forum! Replies come left and right. Thanks guys. I think I'll check out Joe Latham since I'm a bit closer to Leesburg than anywhere in MD. I have his shop info, I'll give hima ring so I'll at least get a good idea of the turnaround time for a repair. Cheers...
Members LouisP Posted July 15, 2004 Members Posted July 15, 2004 You should also consider Steve Carmody in Silver Spring, MD. He is a luthier as well as an authorized Martin Service Center (repairman). 301-589-4663
