Well I've been looking for a sub 700 dollar guitar... but really have been wanting a all solid Martin. :) So I open up the new musicians friend that came today in the mail and what do I see? The Martin D-15 Limited Addition guitar for 699. (Not the mahagony d15's, a spruce and rosewood)

My question is what is the dirt on this guitar? I've never heard of it before, I can't seem to find any info on it, other then the MF stuff. Is the guitar a MF exclusive or what? Anyone have any experience or opinions on this puppy?

I own a d15 (standard all mohagany). I don't think the limited edition is for MF only but I may be mistaken. Anyway... you said Spruce w/ rosewood... the rosewood back and sides version is actually $799. The one for $699 is w/ mohagany back and sides.

What really confuses me is that the standout feature of the 15 series is the mohagany top??? I thought that's what made a guitar fit into the 15 series??? I'm confused as to why you can stick a spruce top on a D15 and still call it a 15???

Personally I would think the guitar would be almost identical to a D1 yet at a lower price. I think the D1's finish may be a little thicker than the satin finish of the 15 series. However, it's not even close to the finish that you get to with the 16's.

I think either of the limited edition guitars (rosewood or mohagany) are awesome deals if you're wanting the all solid wood with a spruce top. I can't really tell what makes them any different than the D1's??? Like you said it's hard to find the specs on the limited/special eds. Martin's website doesn't even mention them.

Maybe someone can clarify better. I'm certainly no expert on guitars... just giving my $.02

Yeah, I wasn't positive it was rosewood, I didn't have the magazine here in front of me as I typed. (as you can tell, I was looking at other things too.;))

From how it appears, the guitar is great... on paper. But thats all I know about it. Maybe monday I'll go razz my music shop and see if I can get any more info on it.

There's a thread on the AG forum about this very guitar with 30 posts:

One of the posters (epaul) had this to say:

If you want to get some idea (in an approximate fashion) of what a spruce topped D15 would sound like, play a Martin DM. The MF-D15 and the DM share the same top wood and the same bracing pattern. They both have mahogany back and sides. The MF-D15 has solid mahogany B&S while the DM uses a laminate mahogany for the B&S. But the top bracing and wood-type are the most telling commonalities, and that regard the MF-D15 and the DM are identical.

I think the thing to keep in mind here is that the 15 will have all solid wood and the M and 1 will be laminates (or am I mistaken). I've owned two all Mahog. 15s and loved them both, but I would think an all solid wood spruce/mahog. 15 would be a great value as well.

The M is laminate on back and sides. The one is solid back w/ laminate sides.

Another thing that makes me think the limited guitar is closer to the 1 series than the 15 is that it has binding... If I'm not mistaken. The standard 15's don't have any and I'd say the addition of the binding to the limited edition is another bonus.

I don't know crap about bracing or other techincal specs but as far as the exterior goes there isn't a lot of difference.
