This customer was buying a $7000 rosewood guitar from a store on 48th street yesterday, and the customer wanted to know how to take care of it.

After the salesman got done talking about his session experience and going to the bigtime studios, what did he have to say to her on the subject of caring for her guitar? This is it: 'use common sense'.

What kind of answer is that? This guy has been there for years, long enough to have some concrete information to give her.

I embarassed him on the spot by providing information about what specific steps are recommended for caring for an acoustic guitar. Whether she wants to find out mroe about these recommendations is of course up to her, but I gave her concrete info, such as not exposing the guitar to rapid changes in temperature. Instead of just saying heat and humidity is bad, I explained that it can cause the glues to come loose. And I'm not even an expert.

I hope I embarassed that guy. I hate snotty, egotistical guitar salesman who diss their clients instead of helping them. $7000 guitar!

I agree with you completely, but if stores like that can continue to draw customers, it's the fault of the customers. If I don't get a good vibe from the people in the shop, I'm sure as hell not going to fork over my hard-earned money, no matter how much I may love their inventory. You're establishing a connection with a good shop and the probablity of future business.

You did the right thing. I do have to wonder, though, why someone buying a $7,000 instrument would have to be told how to take care of it. I would think that she would have had some experience with guitars. Or maybe she's just loaded.

I think she was loaded. She was a good player too though, and this wasn't her first guitar. But she was there with a mom or an aunt who had the checkbook open.

Was she HOT? I mean, I am sort of in the market for a HOT, rich chick who buys $7,000.00 guitars...

Hell, I'd even MOVE to NYC...;)
