I read about this guitar method on another site. It's called Plane Talk. If you go to the site you can read 15 pages of it as a teaser. The guy writes it in a comic book style and although I thought it sounded corny at first I'm willing to consider that perhaps that format for delivering the info might be more engaging than standard text.

I'm intrigued by the prospect of understanding the fretboard better. I'm a collector, so to speak, of how-to books and I never seem to really dive into them. Plane Talk sounds like if could be helpful. The guy who recommended it said it was better for him than Fretboard Logic. Anybody tried this??

I popped an email to you SteveO. Thanks man.

LB, did you go for the pkg. with the video? I read the "about video" part and was impressed to some degree that the guy attached his guitar to a couple of barstools so that he could have the angle he wanted for his video and to add overlaying the fretboard.

My paypal blew up but once the website works I may order the video too. Thanks. I am very interested in this type of thing. I dont want to remaster all of music at my age. I just want to play and understand the fretboard better. Looks like something that might work. I know it's worth the price of a few lessons at the music store so it's a no brainer.

I'll let you know how I like it when I have time to work on it. I guess I will get it in a few weeks.

Thanks SteveO. Upon your recommendation and description I ordered the Tape, Book, CDs and Slide Rule for 49.95.

I just can't imagine this package NOT being worth 49.95 and I like the guys whole attitude too. I dont like to learn from people with the wrong attitude.

I'll do a review on this stuff too when I have a month or so to experience it. I can't wait and I love the comic book format and the slide rule and the way he video'd.

COOOOOL STUFF !

Thanks so much, SteveO, for recommending PlaneTalk, and thanks littlebrother for the order.

For anyone else, I'm the author.

Briefly, in this book I reveal in this book the simple visualisation 'trick' I came up with years ago. It was in fact learning slide in standard tuning which forced me to look for an underlying pattern that could be relied upon as a map. That and becoming a session player down here in Australia... I didn't like looking like a chump when the producers directed me during their sessions. Notation never came into it, but a sound knowledge of music was essential. More often than not, it's left up to the player to come up with something appropriate, but when you're told "don't forget to add the sharp five on your way to the four chord", you have to know instantly what that means, and where to find it.

All the testimonials on my home page are authentic feedback. I have never had a negative response.

I'm just starting work on the "Slide Guitar In Standard Tuning" video. If you'd like to hear some of my resonator playing, click below. These are streaming mp3's. If you want to download them, change the m3u to mp3 suffixes.

This a home recording of Georgia.

This is off an album I did years ago, called Storm a comin':

All slide in Dropped D (D A D G B E).

Happy twangin' from Tamborine Mountain Australia, where it's already tomorrow.

Kirk, I think it's really cool that you dropped by with a post about your methods. I look forward to buying your program as well. I've been wanting to learn the fretboard and have been frustrated by some of the materials I've bought in the past. I was lucky enough to attend a jam that Littlebrother held recently and a byproduct of that experience is the desire to bring something more by way of my own skill to the next jam.

Thanks again.

Kirk,

Nice stuff man, love that Georgia! :)

It sounds strange to me (in a good way) to hear slide guitar without all the jangly stuff that resonates around when you play in an open tuning.

I imagine your technique involves a lot of damping to get that clean sound.

I'm off to practice my drop "D" slide licks.

I don't post here often since my acoustic playing is minimal at best but I come to this forum often because the people on this forum are incredibly generous and knowledgeable. Finding out about Plane Talk is just one of the many things I've gotten out of this forum (put my order in last night!). I so totally echo the sentiments of SteveO as do most, if not all, of you.

My hats off to you guys! You are all fantabulous!

Ordered it in PDF format last night after reading this thread yesterday and finished reading it this morning.

Let me put it to you this way, after trying out one of the techniques he recommends, my husband asked incredulously from the other room: "Is that YOU??...."

Really opened up the world of improv to this standard chord-based guitarist ... I am really stoked and am memorizing his lessons!

I am sticky'ing this thread for a little bit because I feel we can never focus enough on this aspect of playing instead of always talking about GEAR GEAR GEAR.

The comic strip format was a stroke of genious. I cant wait to see how good the video will be also.

LB,

We're waiting anxiously for you to get yours in the mail. From the web pages it's an interesting concept which apparently uses the open forms of E, A, and D as the bases for learning to play scale patterns in any position on the neck. I am sure there is much more to the method than that so I look forward to your upcoming review

It is interesting. I think the PDF is priced a little steeply considering it's just a download, but it is tempting nonetheless. I'm looking forward to a review LB!
