Members louiseB Posted August 13, 2004 Members Posted August 13, 2004 Hi, I've been playing acoustic guitar for about 18months now (mainly rock and folk type songs). I think I might like to get myself a spanish guitar to tinker around with. I'd like to listen to some artists though to get an idea of the kind of music I could aspire to playing. Could anybody recommend some artists for me to listen to? I do like rodrigo y gabriella they are amazing (their music is more mexican I think than spanish). thanksL
Members Phlat Phive Posted August 13, 2004 Members Posted August 13, 2004 Some of my favourite flamenco players are Tomatito, Paco de Lucia, and Vicente Amigo. Also brazillian Bossa Nova and Samba has some great guitarists, check out Baden Powell for instance.
Members acoustiholic Posted August 13, 2004 Members Posted August 13, 2004 I recommend a new guy named Eric Hansen. His new album, "Colors Del Alma" is available through Borders Books and I strongly urge you to check it out. I have a vast Flamenco library, and I savor every cut of this CD. I think he's signed to Epic or Columbia- can't remember which- , but still plays around the Orlando, Fl area every weekend. I've talked with him too - He's a nice guy with no airs about him, but MAN, can he play!
Members opivy Posted August 13, 2004 Members Posted August 13, 2004 Heitor Villa Lobos - Suite Populaire Brasillienne avoid the Norbert Kraft version like the plague. it'll be hard to play at full speed though, but it's something to aspire to.
Members geddyentwistle Posted August 15, 2004 Members Posted August 15, 2004 there is a smoking compilation disc, from the narada series i think, called "GYPSY PASSION" this is my practice disc every time i revisit flamenco...get it!!
Members miramadar Posted August 25, 2004 Members Posted August 25, 2004 If you want inspiration, listen to Manuel Barrueco (www.barrueco.com) or John Williams. I also agree with Opivy that the Villa-Lobos is great to aspire to...and some of it (like Mazurka) isn't impossible to play. But I also like ALL of Bach's music on guitar. Check out Barrueco's "300 Years of Guitar Masterpieces" on Sony Records (I think). I'm sure Amazon.com has it. There's also a lot of more "Spanish" flavored music to aspire to (like Isaac Albeniz and Enrique Granados). There's really a lot to choose from.
Members kwakatak Posted August 25, 2004 Members Posted August 25, 2004 Would the Gipsy Kings fall under this category?
Members miramadar Posted August 25, 2004 Members Posted August 25, 2004 I'm not sure that the Gypsy Kings fall under any specific category. What I've heard of their music, they are definitely influenced by spanish guitar. It definitely would be worth checking out as they are awesome musicians.
