Members Acala Posted August 29, 2004 Members Posted August 29, 2004 This coming Monday, I'll have the opportunity and funds to snag *one* of these guitars (used, of course)--both are pretty exceptional, have nice necks, are in fine condition, and sound great... One's a square-shouldered Gibson J-35 re-issue dreadnaught from the 1980's (solid spruce top/solid mahogany back and sides)--think like a plain-jane Hummingbird (has a simple Martin-style pickguard)... The other is a 2002 Guild JF-30 Jumbo (solid spruce top/solid maple sides, arched laminate maple back) with a Fishman Matrix piezo pickup already installed... I like them both, so I'm honestly and truly torn. I already own a Gibson J-45 and a Guild D-40, and love them. I primarily strum rock 'n' roll/Stones-influenced Alt. Rock stuff/Johnny Cash tunes. I'm pretty much a rhythm/accompaniment guy right now. And I can only afford to get one of the above guitars... Of the two above (and *only* from the above two, okay? FWIW, I like Martins and Larrivees, I played a really nice Tacoma Jumbo once, and Taylors have never really turned me on...)--which would you pick? I need to have my decision made by Monday... Thanks for your thoughts and input--it's most appreciated!
Members Jere Mealer Posted August 29, 2004 Members Posted August 29, 2004 If you already own a dreadnaught, why not go with the jumbo? Should be great for rock rhythm playing.
Members danhops Posted August 29, 2004 Members Posted August 29, 2004 I'd go with the Guild myself. I have a JF-30, and its a wonderful guitar.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted August 29, 2004 Members Posted August 29, 2004 I always loved the sound John Lennon got on rhythm guitar. I'd go with a Gibson J series. I own a Guild and used to play R&R on it. I just always loved that Beatles' acoustic sound.
Members 54merk Posted August 30, 2004 Members Posted August 30, 2004 80's Norlin era Gibsons are not held in high regard, particularly when they did things like making square shouldered versions of guitars which were previously round shouldered. But if you liked it that much, go for it and forget about what anyone else says.
