Members Les_Izzmor Posted September 20, 2004 Members Posted September 20, 2004 A friend of mine and I are looking to start an acoustic band. We have a nice PA and I told him he should get a DI box so that he may run his acoustic through the PA instead of his Fender Hot Rod Deville. Being as I play bass and have no clue about guitar gear, what type/brand would you guys recommend. I think rack-mount would be nice, but not necessary. I don't really imagine price being that much of an issue. I think he's looking for the best value for the money. Thanks
Members RainsongDR1000 Posted September 20, 2004 Members Posted September 20, 2004 If you are looking for just a straight DI, and imp or whirlwind would work. If money isn't an issue and you would like to warm up the sound, have more gain and have infinite EQ and some feedback control... The Baggs PADI.
Members MikeH Posted September 20, 2004 Members Posted September 20, 2004 SansAmp Acoustic DI - infinite control, Hi or Low impedance out to board, active or passive tone, mid notch, AC or battery powered, best bang for your buck IMHO. I've used one for years and swear by it, I also use the SansAmp GT2 to send my archtop signal to the board when I'm not using an amp.
Members Singin' Dave Posted September 20, 2004 Members Posted September 20, 2004 +1 for the Baggs Para-Acousitc D.I. Love mine. Thye go for about $120 on eBay and about $160 in a store. BUT.....make sure your friend gets the newer model w/ adjustable gain AND volume. Gain knob is on front side. Here's a sample of what NOT to get:Older Baggs PA w/out Gain on front side And here's the one you want:Baggs w/ Gain AND Volume The gain allows you to dial in a strong tone until you hear the first squeal of feedback, then you dial it back a bit. Then you can adjust the volume from there very nicely. EQ works great as do the feedback controls (adjustable notch filter and invert phase switch) Solid as a rock with awesome customer service......
Members Scodiddly Posted September 20, 2004 Members Posted September 20, 2004 Whether or not you need a Baggs (or similar high-impedance DI designed for piezo pickups) depends on the guitar(s). If they've all got built in preamps (look for a battery) then any good DI will be fine - I like the EWI LDB-101 active from http://www.audiopile.net. If any of the guitars have an un-preamped output (no battery, under-saddle piezo pickup) then something like a Baggs will make a big difference.
Members Pedro Posted September 21, 2004 Members Posted September 21, 2004 +1 for the baggs. It is one of the best things that I have bought. It has a great eq. I too love mine.
