Members RainsongDR1000 Posted September 28, 2004 Members Posted September 28, 2004 Hey Lester, Congrats on purchasing one of the most underappreciated brand of guitars there is! I have a DY90 (circa 1984) and think it is truly one of the nicest sounding guitars I've heard, especially for being laminate back and sides. Mine is Jacaranda instead of Koa but other than that they look identical. I have starting gigging more with my Rainsong because I was tired of dinging up the Yairi, but I still think the Yairi is the 2nd favoritist (is that a word?) I've owned. Enjoy!

Members guitarcapo Posted September 28, 2004 Members Posted September 28, 2004 My first guitar was a 1980 Alvarez Yairi DY-45. I played it all through college and finally got it stolen in the early 90's. I've got an Alvarez DY-50 (Brazilian Rosewood lam) and a DY51 (quilt mahogany lam) since and both sound awesome. That Yairi guy knows his stuff.

Buddyboy, I got her at a store near where I live in the southern sububs of Chicago called Midlothian Music. They are an Alvarez and Yairi dealer. They are located in Orland Park, Il. Same place I ordered my Ibanez Pat Metheny from. Nice folks as far as that goes. Decent selection of Yairis, but it helps for me since I can sit down and play em' there. I brought home a WY1BK first (black Bob Weir) but I discovered it had a laminate cedar top not spruce and that it was a 1998 model they were charging me full boat for (about 1495.00) sans case. I swapped it for the DY-91. The DY-91 was never touched since it left the Yairi factory except by maybe St. Louis Music for an inspection, she was still in the factory bag inside the case unopened. I put some big Martin strings on her and adjusted the neck a bit more concave. I bought a Dean Markley soundhole pickup for it. It's no system 6 like the new Yairi electric/acoustics have (best electronics I've ever heard) but it's fine with my Kustom Quad 100 amp. This guitar is as good as any Taylor I have ever owned and much more detail for the money. I have had a Taylor 514 and 414 ce before. Absolutely stunning looks make it an enjoyable experience so far.
