Members Gazelle Posted October 13, 2004 Members Posted October 13, 2004 I'm hearing 1 3/4, 1 11/16, and 1 7/8... being a novice flatpick bluegrass player on a dread, I'm curious of pros and cons. Does it have anything to with size of hands, arm lenth? I've got xl hands and a long reach. I also normally fret with my thumb behind directly underneath, vs. on top toward the 6th string. But I'm not sure this has anything to do with it. Any advice?
Members tapeman1 Posted October 13, 2004 Members Posted October 13, 2004 If you have long fingers then a 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 neck will probably be fine for you. It might even be more comfortable than a 1 11/16 neck. I have really short fingers so anything wider then 1 11/16 is just too uncomfortable for me to play. The neck profile has a lot to do with how comfortable it is for you as well. Dispite my stubby digits the modified V profile on my D-18V is the most comfortable I've ever played. If there is a store near you that carries several Martins you should go in and A/B the D-18GE and D-18V. They have the same profile but different widths. That way you can decide which width is better for you without being confused by a different profile.
