Members Velkov Posted October 12, 2004 Members Posted October 12, 2004 I got bored of playing the guitar a few years ago. So I started playing the bass. I explored other instruments as well, but was pretty happy laying down the grooves on the fat strings. So one day about three weeks ago, I was at a family function where I play the acoustic guitar and my mom and I sing Bulgarian folk songs all night, and I realized that I hated my Epiphone AJ-18S acoustic. It was big, bulky, uncomfortable.... I think I bought it for the looks back in the day. A week later the Epiphone was on Ebay, it sold for an insane price of $220 USD. And then a week later, I accidentally ended up going to this big sale at Long & McQuade in Toronto, and picked up a Simon & Patrick Folk Cedar Mahogany. It was a factory second, so I got it for $275 Canadian. Note that it's the mahogany version not the cherry, so I think it normally sells for $400. It took me and the salesman 10 minutes to figure out what it is that makes it a factory second. There was a funny discoloration in the binding, in a spot that nobody would ever see. Then I bought a set of D'Addario Silk and Steel, and I haven't put this guitar down since. In two weeks I went from playing the guitar once a month for 10 minutes, to playing for at least an hour every day. A little bit about the guitar: it's the Lasido Folk shape. There is an Art & Lutherie, Norman, Seagull, and Simon & Patrick version of it. Solid cedar top, laminate mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck. Super comfortable neck. Gorgeous woody look, and beautiful sound. And the Silk and Steel strings make it so easy to play, I really don't understand why I only found out about them a couple of weeks ago. So then a couple of days ago I went to another music store to get some stuff and played an Art & Lutherie AMI Nylon Cedar. That will be my next buy! I think I am addicted to LaSiDo products! A piece of advice to people that are acoustic guitar shopping but don't want to spend $1000 or more on a Taylor or a Martin, check out the Lasido brands (Seagull, Norman, Simon & Patrick, Art & Lutherie)! Amazing guitars for low prices!
Members bsman Posted October 12, 2004 Members Posted October 12, 2004 I've played several S&Ps at a local shop, and found them to be rather impressive for the price - good playability, decent tone. I have also found that Tacoma makes a number of guitars (esp. EM9 and DM9) that for the money (~$600) sound and play much better than expected. However, I do have to say that given all that, if I had the ability to shield enough income from the wife and kids, I'd still want to get an HD-28!!!
Members catdaddy Posted October 12, 2004 Members Posted October 12, 2004 Velkov welcome to the LaSiDo appreciation association! I own an S&P Spruce/Rosewood Pro cutaway and a Seagull S6 Cedar (with the laminate cherry back and sides) and I love 'em both. Some people are put off by the wider necks but I find them very comfortable and the smell of the wood of both guitars is just fab! Enjoy!
Members theflyingeyebal Posted October 13, 2004 Members Posted October 13, 2004 I have several of their guitars in my house. Can't recommend them enough. They sound much better then low end Martins, Epiphones, Fenders, Yamahas and whatnot. I've got a S&P parlour and a Seagull S6, and my dad has a S&P cedar guitar with a tobaco sunburst and a Seagull M12. They are all great guitars. They are so cheap if you are Canadian also.
Members Fleabitten Posted October 15, 2004 Members Posted October 15, 2004 About 4 years ago I set out to buy my first acoustic and came back with a S6 cedar/cherry. I played it for a week or so and returned it, I cant remember why though? Maybe I should find a place in Nashville that sells them. Anyone?
Members EvilTwin Posted October 15, 2004 Members Posted October 15, 2004 I've got the Seagull Folk, and it's been my beater/gig guitar for a few years. Amazing sound. I was set on a Martin 000M, then I found the 'Gull Folk...similar specs (solid tops, lam back/sides, hard shell case, the 'Gull has a wider nut width), but the 'Gull just kicked the Martin's ass...for half the price. Welcome to the LaSiDo family.
