Members solitaire Posted October 17, 2004 Members Posted October 17, 2004 I have an HD-28 I have no intention of selling, but I thought I might buy a smaller guitar with good projection. That would be a 000-bodied instrument, possibly an OM-21.If you have any experience of the two any thoughts and reflections are gladly recieved, such as similarities and dissimilarities in quality and sound and so on. Cheers!
Members rh2d Posted October 17, 2004 Members Posted October 17, 2004 I have several guitars, mostly Martins. The HD 28 and the OM's are two of the best Martin makes. I play both because they have a different role in guitar music. Get one but the one thing to think about is that the OM 21 will have a 1 3/4" nut width whereas the HD will have the 1 11/16" nut. That's not much difference but you might check and see if it bothers you. It doesn't bother me. If it does the 000 is about the same guitar but with the 1 11/16" nut. The idea of the larger nut is to make finger picking easier. I really love these OMs. You get a great tone plus an easy to play guitar. Note separation is excellant. There is a warmness in my heart for the HD, it's the jam guitar, the fun guitar with great tone. But it is not a fingerpicking guitar in the way we think of them today.
Members pickinray Posted October 17, 2004 Members Posted October 17, 2004 An OM-style is an excellent choice for a smaller bodied guitar. I have an OM-16GT and I enjoy it very much -- it sounds great and it has a wider neck, which is good for fingerpicking. I would go with an OM over a 000 because of the wider neck on the OM (the neck width is the main difference between the OM and 000, the body size is the same). The OM-21 is a very good guitar and it would complement your HD-28 nicely. The OM-21 should have a more balanced tone than the HD-28, which emphasizes the bass tones.
Members solitaire Posted October 19, 2004 Author Members Posted October 19, 2004 Cheers guys! I guess the Dread is a bit tough to finger, and a smaller bodied guitar soundwise I think would suit fingering better. The basic reason I tend to look beyond the modern 000 14 fret is more a matter of tone. I truely love the longscale necks with their enhanced projectional capabilities. The long scale might be why Guild 12-strings usually have higher definition than other 12-strings. Any suggestion of string gauge for an OM?
Members guitarcapo Posted October 19, 2004 Members Posted October 19, 2004 Taylor "14" series guitars do the small body thing well.
Members pickinray Posted October 19, 2004 Members Posted October 19, 2004 I prefer Martin SP or Marquis light gauge (.012-.054) on my OM-16GT. Either 80/20 or phosphor bronze are OK.
Members solitaire Posted October 21, 2004 Author Members Posted October 21, 2004 Oh, I thought you were supposed to string it with lighter strings due to the narrower waist... I mean my HD, Gibby J-100 and J-50 are all .012 due to the width of the waist.
