Members Greg Bogoshian Posted October 18, 2004 Members Posted October 18, 2004 Regarding the Uncle Plum gig live test of the padauk and Cuban mahogany chambered body guitar I built by Mike Gladstone which was this guitar's real baptism under fire... Mike plays the shazzit out of a guitar... I had filed a deeper groove in the low "E" slot of the saddle, but it wasn't quite deep enough. I couldn't push it out, but Mike sure could. I left my file at home, so I told him (in warm-up) that if he didn't want to play it due to that, I would certainly understand. He just told me he would try to be a little easier on it. Very high gain standing 4 feet or so in front of his Marshall stack and very near the huge PA system speakers at the levels they play would get it to howl a bit, so he figured he would use it for the clean or cleaner tones. He was even on the edge with his PRS and for some reason ALL the guitars there had some issues with noise that night. The prototype could not be played due to its more resonant body. To easy to get it to howl at the volumes they played. In fairness, the patches were set up for his PRS, not my guitar... To make a long story a bit less long, he and everyone else there just LOVED the tone and response of my guitar, including even the road crew, and Mike told me that it sounds *far* superior to his PRS! It did to me too, but I couldn't be entirely unbiased... He said that the guitar's tone and playability and comfort genuinely inspired him to play better and on every song but the one where he wished he had used my guitar, whenever he was spotlighted for an emotional style solo, he put down the PRS and picked up my padauk guitar!! The thing sounded ENORMOUS!!! It was articulate and refined and somehow seemed to produce a sound field that was 3 times the size of the PRS! Now, I am not knocking that guitar at all, because until you heard mine, it sounded incredible... Then, HOLY {censored}... in his words, "one step closer to God!!!" He told me that if he had $2000 in disposable cash, he would definitely get one. I have been given an open invitation to bring it to any gig any time I want to!! I also did oversee him talking to their other guitarist and lead vocalist when he was showing it to him (he didn't know I was nearby) and pointing to the pickup switching scheme and saying "awesome"... It's an easy word to lip read! Bottom line, the guitar performed so much better in the live setting than in my wildest dreams and I have a better understanding of its limitations. As I felt, it is probably THE killer studio guitar of killer studio guitars and for clean and crunch, you would be hard pressed to out-do what this guitar can do. It was a fantastic and I mean FANTASTIC debut, and I cannot thank Mike Gladstone enough for the opportunity. I had a horrible weekend with the houses (still no offers and now we have lowered the price of our old house and come to find out that despite what our home inspectors said, we have approximately $15,000 in unforseen repairs on the new house that cannot wait...) and this gig and the feedback I received really gave a tired old man's heart a lift and a genuine thrill! He played one piece with such emotion with such glorious tone and dynamics that I had to fight back a tear at one point it was so spectacular! I'm extremely tired and I am babbling now, but this really blew me away! I am psyched beyond belief!!! Boggs

Members LesStrater Posted October 20, 2004 Members Posted October 20, 2004 Great report Boggs! - Any pics of the gig?
Members Greg Bogoshian Posted October 20, 2004 Author Members Posted October 20, 2004 I am looking into a vendor now to be able to CNC the chambered portion of the body at least. Yes, I will be selling them (if people buy them, of course). They will be on an order basis. Expect some waiting period for me to make them as they are extremely labor intensive. The only pics I was able to get were on film, so I would need to be able to get them scanned and most of them are still in the camera until we find more stuff to shoot. I will get any up as I have them available. You are right... I will never forget that moment when I heard it directly following the PRS especially! Boggs
Members buddyboy Posted October 21, 2004 Members Posted October 21, 2004 Must have pics next time! We watched her grow up, you know!
Members Greg Bogoshian Posted October 22, 2004 Author Members Posted October 22, 2004 I know... When the rst of the roll in my wife's camera gets used up, I'll try and get the photos scanned. Another top Central NY guitarist just came over to the new house and played them. He plays lead for Atlas who has opened for Tower of Power and Michael MacDonald and many others... He loved them too! I'll let you know when he gigs with it as he offered as well! Boggs
