Members surfcat Posted November 29, 2004 Members Posted November 29, 2004 Will putting a Baggs M-1 on my Gibson sound as good as buying an under $1000 acoustic with a built in ust pickup?
Members TaylorFishin' Posted November 29, 2004 Members Posted November 29, 2004 To my ear, the M1 with proper EQ and effects will sound better than any UST ever made at any price! Of all pickups on the market today, a UST would be my last choice for good acoustic tone. Maybe as part of a dual source system, but I would never purchase one for a stand alone pickup. I think your outboard sound processing gear is just as important as the pickup, maybe more important. Scott

Members J. Posted November 30, 2004 Members Posted November 30, 2004 I'd take a quality soundhole pickup over an UST anyday. Admittedly I'm an UST bigot, but I never hear decent tone from them unless they're heavily chorused or doused with some other effects.
Members sdelsolray Posted November 30, 2004 Members Posted November 30, 2004 There is quite a difference between the M-1 sound (magnetic with a bit of soundboard) and a UST. You should listen to both, they're as easy to tell apart as orange and pink. You'll no doubt like one better than the other. Get that one.

Not only is that pickup gonna sound nicer, but without the UST absorbing the sound under the saddle, the acoustc will have a louder acoustic sound when unplugged. For me, the acoustical sound is too important to compramize.*

Members seven7 Posted December 1, 2004 Members Posted December 1, 2004 i've heard the m1 sound awful, and i've heard it sound great. when i've heard it sound great it was with a good preamp like the baggs padi. so, if you go with the m1 by all means get a good preamp.
