Looking for a jumbo Acoustic/Electric

I'm in the market for a jumbo without the cut-away and with good electronics. I've got around $500 to spend (but would prefer to spend less if possible).

I was thinking on the 2614 or 2414 Maple Lake guitars by Wechter lately any oppinions on them? The reviews section only has one oppinion on the both of them and they are all 10s.

What is the tonal differences between these models lacewood verses mahogany back and sides?

I'll be playing with one other guitarist in a folk style mostly just rythm work with some singing in there as well of course. Unplugged and plugged work is going to be close to equal. I'm not looking for a recording guitar.

Any other suggestions?

Take a look at an Ibanez AJ200CEAV ($589.00 at Music 123) and the Alvarez AJ60SC ($489.00 at Music 123). I have strummed the Alvarez, and for the money, thought it was a nice jumbo A/E.

I have been a little disappointed with quality from Ibanez lately. Not quite what I was hoping for compared to an acoustic dread I bought about 5 years ago (Artwood 200). The Alvarez has a non-compensated saddle, more than likely plastic, but it seems to work well.

Good luck with your search. These both fit your price range and at least give you a few things to look at.

Well, I have a Wechter, but it is the Pathmaker USA model. It was the best sounding guitar of any Taylor, Larrivee, Martin or anything else I played in that price range ($1200-$1500), although it was quite a bit more than you have to spend.

I find the build quality excellent, the shop that builds them was set up by Abe Wechter himself, and they do all the final setups in their custom shop in Michigan. I don't think you could go wrong for the money.

I'd be surprised if there was much difference between the lacewood and mahogany bodies. Being they are laminated back and sides, you wouldn't notice it like you would with a solid wood model.

Youmight also try looking at the Carvin Cobalts, the C780 is around $550, a little more than you want to spend mmaybe, but they get good words around here.

**edit** oops, Carvin doesn't sell non-cutaway Jumbos.

I'm not sure of the model numbers, but I've played some Maple Lakes here in the Twin Cities and for the money I thought they were about the best thing around for low budget guitars. Played and looked great and sounded pretty reasonable for an all laminate guitar. I sense you'd do well with one.

THere are a couple of Takamine EG523SC on eBay right now tht are probably going to sell for less than $500. They look to be very similar to the AlvarezAJ60SC in basic construction but the maple is nicely flamed, there are lots of abalone inlays and a Gibson-style pickguard. There are at least 3 people here who have this very model and love them. The HC reviews from the past several years also have very high praise.

There are also a couple 12-string versions of this same guitar. If I had funds to match my GAS I'd jump on any one of these.

I never can understand why people looking for an electric/acoustic never consider hollowbody archtop electrics. They are acoustic in nature and use a pickup. They sound better than a lot of quacky flattops fitted with piezo USTs. I guess it's just not popular due to tradition....

Gotta agree here. I have one of those and it's really amazing. Big and full unplugged (albeit a little bright from the maple) and great plugged in. The jumbo took a little getting used to (sizewise) but I'm glad I jumped at it.

I have the 12-string version and still can not believe what I paid for it (@$550). It's a beauty in looks and sound. My original intentions were to look at Taylors and Martins in the under

two grand range. The salesman asked me to check out the Takamine for kicks.

After trying all of the guitars, the Takamine stood out the most.

ok I'm not nuts (thought it was just GAS), I want to sell my Seagull 12 for the Tak or alvarez . Got to strum both and loved them ! The Tak wins on looks and I think the maple sound's better unplugged .Seagull is very nice but mellow ?? someone with more talent might be able to get more out of it than I .Never had a chance to try the 6 string models though of the Tak or alvarez, but my opinion of both brands has gone way up !
