String noise when recording dobro

When I tried to lay down some tracks with my dobro I'm really fighting the swishy noise I'm getting using a glass slide. I really try to dampen behind the slide but I still get that ocaacional swish.

I'm using Rode NT-5s with a RNP. These mics are super sensitive and pick up every little thing. Should I switch to an SM57, or is this more a guitar or string issue.

Thanks

Where do you put the mic? Mabey put it farther away from the neck side. What about EQing it at playback? Mabey you can back some of the high-end doun without loseing the character. A heavier slide might help. I use "deep-well sockets" sometimes.

  • ...What finger is the slide on? I play slide with ring finger, this way I have two fingers to stop string noise on the other side of the slide.

What kind of slide are you using? If you are using a thin glass one that could be the cause. Make sure the walls a nice and thick, like the neck of a wine bottle. Or switch to a heavy metal slide. With a heavier slide you barely need to touch the strings, so you will barely hear the sounds as it slides across the windings.

Do you have any slide recommendations? I've bought a few slides and they are all very light, metal or glass. (under $10 types, so that could be the problem)

Although I have a nice heavy Lap Steel slide, which is great for that, but I'd like a good one for standard slide playing.
