Members ALife Posted January 4, 2005 Members Posted January 4, 2005 I play a Martin DC-1E in our praise band at church. Lately I've been breaking a lot of strings as I tend to play pretty hard. I've been using Elixer - light guage strings. Should I move to mediums or just play lighter. I like the sound and feel of these strings but wonder if mediums would work better for me.
Members Oldghm Posted January 5, 2005 Members Posted January 5, 2005 Are the strings breaking at the bridge? If you are playing plugged in, try turning up the guitar and playing softer. It is my opinion the most common reason for broken strings is the picker can't hear so he/she plays harder, but it usually doesn't help or sound good. If you are not plugged in, can you get closer to the pulpit, piano, maybe a musicstand? Something to reflect the sound back to you a little. If you can hear you will not play so hard. If the strings are breaking at the nut, see a guitar repairman. If the string is breaking at the tuner see "The Care and Feeding of Your Martin" for proper installation instructions. Theoretically the light gauge string will heat up and soften sooner than a medium would but in the end the medium would probably break too. Oldghm
Members FWAxeIbanez Posted January 5, 2005 Members Posted January 5, 2005 Do you like this guitar a lot? I am looking into them right now, I'd like a pretty bass heavy tone, really warm as opposed to woody and bright... Is this a good gitfiddle for a strummer?
