Members Duanen'BettsFan Posted February 11, 2005 Members Posted February 11, 2005 Hello, a friend of mine is looking to start guitar on a low budget. He was looking at a $100 epiphone but I tried this particular guitar and i feel that theres better things out there in that price range. Living in New Jersey I asked if he wanted to try an SX because I have heard alot of good things about them and that they are " a good bang for the buck." But i do not know much about the acoutics however he doesn't feel comfortable putting his money into a no name company. I also really like the cheap yahama guitar packages(package is not a need for him). So are there any other preferences? The epiphone, yahama, worth trying out the SX, a washburn, or any other suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Members TheLinz Posted February 12, 2005 Members Posted February 12, 2005 For that money, I'd go hit some pawn shops and find a beater that plays pretty good, whatever the brand name. Washburn does make some fairly decent cheapers. Alvarez. Esteban...no not really. The Tak Jasmine is not that bad...I think its a Tak. I had a friend that got the Esteban, sent it back, and got the Jasmine. I played both for minute or two. The Jasmine was much better.
Members UGB Posted February 12, 2005 Members Posted February 12, 2005 I am reluctant to sell guitars that don't have a solid top and my market is new players. The only guitar I have w/o a solid top is 3/4 dread for kids from Oscar Schmidt and there are too many good reasons to carry it than not to carry it just because it has a laminate top. $150 is about the bottom end of the price point for my stuff.

Members Vere Posted February 14, 2005 Members Posted February 14, 2005 alvarez RD8 or RF8. 199, but come with a hsc, saving the cost of a gigbag. maybe ... a ah crap i can't remember. it is a lasido company. wild cherry? art and lutherie? they are nice. my friend, a school music teacher, plays hers like whoa. man i can't believe i said that.
Members shecky Posted February 15, 2005 Members Posted February 15, 2005 Best bet is to try as many in the price range as possible. Don't worry about the name brand (at this price range, thay all likely come from Asia), as long as it plays OK. A few months ago, I was killing some time at a Sam Ash store and was pleasantly surprised how decent some sub $100 house brand guitars were. Played well, sounded good enough. There were a few stinkers, so it's probably a good idea to try first.
