Members Etienne Rambert
You got a heck of a deal! LX $699 free hardshell case? No acoustic in that price range can touch what you have. Congratulations.

Members chopz
Originally posted by kkyle Sorry, I don't hate the tone or feel, can't vouch for its reliability. As far as the cracks go, doesn't warranty cover that? I wonder what percentage of Ovations crack? I have a 30 yr old Ovation. It still looks brand new, no cracks, sounds and plays great. Ovation gives a lifetime warranty on the top. If the top cracks, Ovation will replace it with no questions asked. A friend has a 30 yr old martin D28 that looks like a piece of junk. The top is so thin from scratching that it is about to break into pieces. It sounds good and plays ok.
Members rh2d
About twenty years ago I was at a small gathering where Chris Martin was the guest speaker. He said that in about twenty years we are all going to have to learn how to make quality guitars out of materials that don't drain our rain forrest. I've seen him say this in writting too. Looking back on it where we were and where we are, we are making some progress. The Rainsong and CA are prime examples. The quality laminates that are coming out are another. Ovation, which was ahead of it's time is another. Will we run out of tone woods? I don't know but there are some decent replacements now that weren't here twenty years ago, but for the Ovation. I'm afraid our ancestors are going to have to learn to live with it.

Why don't they go for a full sound with a full body as their main product and offer the shallow body as a compromise for those that travel or are small or whatever? The LX shallow bowls sound pretty good. I have a deep bowl and it sounds great.

I personally know two others who have experienced this.Sell the blasted thing before this happens to you. When I was touring with my pair of Glen Campbells, for several months I was playing in pretty much every environment you could imagine...The dry heat of Cairo to the swampy humidity of Rio de Janeiro and everything in between (it was one of those "Cultural Ambassador" things for the US Government) and I never had a problem with the 6-string, because I made a humidifier (out of a 35mm film canister with a piece of sponge and a bunch of pin-holes) and kept 'em in both cases. The main prob w/ the 12-string was the neck kept bowing, but that was a common-enough prob with the mid-to-late 70s Ovation 12s...Todays, Ovation 12s seem much more stable, neckwise. Ovations sound pretty good-plugged in, but I do prefer my Guilds, Taylor and Gibsons acoustically.

I see people mention cracked tops quite a bit on the net but have never seen one when I was working at the guitar shop. A neck reset on the less expensive models is supposedly near impossible, though.I still wouldn't trade mine for the gigs I do..(outside, near the beach)But I am looking for a nice sunburst OM to record with and take out on special gigs.....Anyone?! Members Etienne Rambert
My 16 year Elite is just fine. No cracks. Stays in tune better than any guitar I've ever owned. Neck plays beautifully. For the right price, I'd buy an Elite LX. But it makes no sense for me to own two Ovation Elites. I'd trade up most likely. But my heart is still set on a Taylor 700-900 series.

I call it "Old Reliable." It doesn't get much playing time any more (my main guits now are Larrivee and Collings), but I still pull it out for campfire jams and hot humid outdoor summer shows. Always in tune, ready to go, and always sounds, well, like an Ovation, which I've always thought was OK. David
Members mikeSF
my standard balladeer is 32 years old and has no structural problems at all. i found it in a pawn shop in the 80's and have treated it pretty rough ever since. it never goes in it's case and my toddler bangs it around quite a bit. i cannot imagine being dissuaded from buying a new ovation by this talk of cracks and other things which may or may not occur with any brand of guitar. personally, i never really buy a guitar with the intent of owning it for 10 years or more. Nobody has ever been able to describe what you can use it for. Can't use them as frying pans cause the plastic melts. You can, if you remove the top, use them as bowls to have candy or fruits in.
