Members kkyle Posted February 19, 2005 Members Posted February 19, 2005 During one of my bored moments, I shot an email asking for the price on a 1771lx natural Ovation at Guitar Trader. They sent back $699! Went to AMS, sent the price, they matched with free shipping, case, 3 mos payment off a no interest card. All those FRGs out there are going for this! Got it yesterday, not a FRG, perfect condition. Time for shim removal. Got....to...stop...shopping...
Members Terry Allan Hall Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 Well, if you're happy with it, then congratulations! Used to play a couple of Ovations (Glen Campbell 6- and 12-string....the 6 was pretty good, the 12 was dreadful!)...lot's of people rag on 'em, but lot's of folks make fine music with 'em, too!
Members kwakatak Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 bang! Just kidding! If if makes you happy then more power to you.
Members kkyle Posted February 20, 2005 Author Members Posted February 20, 2005 You know, they're really not that bad. They're different. I'm really not much of a guitar snob. I'm taking this to the lake camp and really like the tupperware back. I can really say I like the neck also. I'm thinking about finding a lid that fits the hole and keeping my lettuce in it.

Members kkyle Posted February 20, 2005 Author Members Posted February 20, 2005 You know what this Ovation-hate thing reminds me of-Glock handguns. "Something just not right about a handgun made out of plastic". Now Glock is a dominate force in law enforcement. Ovation has taken a step forward in the LX series but the thing is, if they ever perfect the sound to the point it replicates wood, some people will still hate them. The beauty of thermoplastics is the ability to replicate, but that removes a lot of the artistry of guitar making.
Members desaljs Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 kkyle, I am now an Ovation owner also! 1777 Legend LX. I really like it. Different from the rest of my acoustics, and fun to play. The LX upgrade has made this a nice instrument. Tone not as rich as my Taylor 710, but I was not expecting it to be. I am happy with it and will not be afraid to take it outside to play when Spring gets here.............................
Members rh2d Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 I have an Adamas SMT and have had it about seven years. I've thought many times of selling it after reading the hate stuff on the Net but it's just too good a guitar to get rid of. Someone said it, "it's fun to play". It has a good tone that I would compare to a good wood and when it is plugged in I don't think it can be beat. When we have our family get togethers this is the guitar they want to play. I play wood but this Ovation has a place too.
Members digitalsnipe Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 I tried the Adamas. Don't remember which model it was. It was a DARK looking guitar and I'd swear the top was a slick-finished course weave carbon fiber. I suspect this was engineered to give the guitar a near-zero expansion ratio between the top and back. A wood top does not have this stability and, again just guessing, was the reason for its reputation to separate from the back. Played the Adamas for a little bit. Kinda thought -sound-wise. An unsure sound for me. I also owned a 1973 Glen Campbell 6 that played well but the sound... . Great fingerstyle guitar. The Adamas was priced at $2,200.00 at this high-end retail store. I remember paying $360.00 for the Glen Campbell. Above the Adamas on the wall was a Martin for about a grand more. Think I would have gone for the Martin. The Adamas still seemed to have muted sound to me. Confirmed that by immediately picking up the Martin. In all fairness, the store had this annoying Musak loop mucking up my ear-space but the Martin still had an audibly warmer sound than the Adamas and better (understated) sustain. Did not play the Adamas plugged but I hear that is where it excells. So, can't draw any final conclusions yet. Again, great fingerstyle guitar.
Members kkyle Posted February 20, 2005 Author Members Posted February 20, 2005 My experience with acoustics is limited to a Gibson Dove I bought in the sixties. In no way would I say a 1771Lx sings like a two or three thousand American classic wood guitar, but for $699 out the door (or truck), I'm happy.
Members funkyfingers Posted February 20, 2005 Members Posted February 20, 2005 All the the ones I'ne heard plugged in sounded very nice. Unplugged, well....... ehh.
Members digitalsnipe Posted February 21, 2005 Members Posted February 21, 2005 There's a guitar for every sound in about any price range. I remember seeing the Glen Campbell model I bought hanging on the wall and had to have it. It fit my budget and compared to the Yamaha ax-handled 12 string I traded in on it no one could have convinced me of any other decision at the time. But, when I started jamming with other people I realized it had more of a muffled percussion sound than the other guitars playing in the mix. So, I traded up to a Martin D-35. That guitar was a pre-truss rod 1973 I bought new. After two trips back to the factory for neck resets, within 2 years, I was left owning a Martin in absentia and wishing I'd kept the Ovation rather than having traded it. I suppose that throws some cudos toward the Ovation. Turns out I divested myself of the Martin immediately after receiving it back the second time. "Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me." I wasn't going to wait for the hat-trick.
Members Stringman Posted February 22, 2005 Members Posted February 22, 2005 I've been told by as local luthier/repairman, that Ovations have too much lacquer which deadens the sound, and if you remove it and refinish the guitar with a lighter coat, they really come alive.
Members nylon rock Posted February 22, 2005 Members Posted February 22, 2005 The last guy I saw playing an Ovation got fired!! His name was Dan, and Donald Trump fired his ass a few weeks ago on nationwide primetime television. The show ended with Dan playing the Ovation in the taxicab, singing some sort of blues lament, impromptu.
Members traitor Posted February 22, 2005 Members Posted February 22, 2005 I own an Ovation Legend. I hate its tone, its playability, its feel, and its unreliability. The wood top and the plastic back are horrible design flaws. When humidity and temperature change occurs, the wood expands and contracts, but the roundback doesn't. What happens? the top cracks. I'm not the only person to have experienced this. I personally know two others who have experienced this. Sell the blasted thing before this happens to you.

As far as the cracks go, doesn't warranty cover that? I wonder what percentage of Ovations crack?
Members JasmineTea Posted February 23, 2005 Members Posted February 23, 2005 You know, if we could just get Ovation out of the way, it'd make room for some REAL guitar companies.
