Members Whammy_Sosa Posted March 20, 2005 Author Members Posted March 20, 2005 No, its on ebay. Its a cheap Checkmate guitar.
Members shecky Posted March 20, 2005 Members Posted March 20, 2005 Hard to say. My guess is that it's a laminate taken from a tree that's irregularly shaped in cross section, so that when the laminate ply is shaved off (kinda like the way pencil sharpener can peel off a thin sheet of wood), the color alternates between heartwood and sapwood. This would account for the differing color stripes and the broad flat grain.
Members daddyO Posted March 20, 2005 Members Posted March 20, 2005 I'd say that that is burl walnut. It reminds me of the dash of my boss' Jaguar XK-R.

Funny looking Walnut, my Classical is a walnut Back and sides Sanchez and it looks nothing like that; That looks more like cork to me than anything else
Members greystoke 2 Posted March 21, 2005 Members Posted March 21, 2005 Don't think that material is walnut...perhaps a 'foto flame' artificial effort? For anyone who's interested-Walnut comes in many guises-Anybody who is familiar with firearms-rifle stocks particularly, knows the infinite variety of species/figure/color that just that one wood is capable of showing. It truly is the choice for that use. Dunno 'bout Guitar application. Greystoke

And those of you who think that is photoflames, what is it supposed to look like?

And those of you who think that is photoflames, what is it supposed to look like? Well, for a start I think it is supposed to look like walnut, and I would like to see a sample of a single piece of walnut with that grain. I've looked through a number of furniture sites for samples, and nothing like that, here are the common grains http://www.painting-effects.co.uk/graining/walnut.htm I'm sticking my neck out and stating that the guitar is laminate, non existant finish in the natural world, or most certainly not Walnut
Members guitarcapo Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 My guess is that that's a veneer of some sort of Asian lumber that's alternating between sapwood and heartwood. Looks kind of interesting but fugly.
Members bsman Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 Looks to me like a veneer of a hubble space telescope photo of jupiter!
