Members LDF Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 I was in the guitar shop the other day getting some strings and I noticed a crazy thing. There is apparently a brand of strings called "lefties" or something like that. It says "made for left handed guitarists". I'm left handed and I've never had a problem with normal strings. I don't quite understand how a set of strings could be dextrispecific (I made that word up). Can anyone explain what's so special about these strings?? I wish I could remember more about them. All I do know is that they looked cheap. There was a cartoonish drawing of a lefty guitarist on the box.
Members owd200 Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 Sounds like a big fat gimmick to me
Members Mattface Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 Left handed strings are wound in the opposite direction of regular right handed strings. If the windings on regular strings are clockwise, the windings on lefty strings are counterclockwise. I'm right handed, but I always use lefty strings on all my guitars. gives them that Hendrix "voodoo vibe"

It's easy to type with a straight face... I just don't do this Actually I AM a salesman I work at Guitar center DOH!
Members bsman Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 The really cool thing about it is, if you buy a dozen, they give you a free left-handed string winder and a left-handed coffee cup!
Members Mattface Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 On a related note, I've always wondered this: Do lefties play the upright bass upside down?
Members guitarcapo Posted March 22, 2005 Members Posted March 22, 2005 I once got a used piano cheap from a friend's garage sale. I told them it was a left handed one and they'd have a tough time selling it.

No, they play the downright bass down side up!Well I find it very hard to beleive that a string that is wound in a different direction makes the slightest bit of difference. That IS a gimmick.

That IS a gimmick. Actually, they are just Australian strings. All the strings are wound the other way south of the equator. They got the idea to import them here as Lefties Strings when southpaws from down under found Strings imported from the Northern Hemisphere sounded better to them, and some brilliant Aussie entrepreneur realized there must be a market for THEIR strings among lefty guitarists to the north. The idea of using them strung right handed to get that elusive Hendrix sound was my own, but it works. REALLY try a set, and see if you cant hear that subtle "Voodoo Vibe" that you just can't get from a right handed guitar strung with regular strings.
Members Tralfaz Posted March 23, 2005 Members Posted March 23, 2005 They're great strings, but unless you use a left-handed pick, the effect is essentially cancelled out.
