Members EnzyteMan Posted March 19, 2005 Members Posted March 19, 2005 Looking at Avalon and Larrivee right now, but considering any. Made a big mistake sound-wise in buying an Ovation, and looking for something with a rosewood back and sides. Looking to spend anywhere from $500-1500, and a cutaway and pickup are a must. What are some nice, warm guitars I should be looking at?
Members SlowFingers Posted March 19, 2005 Members Posted March 19, 2005 You just have way too many options at that price range. Look into some Larrivees, Martins, Taylors, Breedloves, etc. Find the one you like best and go with it. After the clips posted by guitaradoptions, I am now a fan of the Breedlove Revival. I wish I had your dilemna, in being able to spend that kind of cash on a guitar, because I am sure you will find a beauty. Don't rush it.
Members EnzyteMan Posted March 19, 2005 Author Members Posted March 19, 2005 I'm not going to rush. I liked my friend's Larrivee Rosewood drednought, and I saw a video clip this morning of a guy playing an Avalon through a Fishman Aura with great sound. I want a mellow, pretty sound for picking and strumming, and enough fullness to get just a bit of overdrive for emphasis when plugged into a tube amp and picked hard.
Members JasmineTea Posted March 19, 2005 Members Posted March 19, 2005 I'd suggest something with a "D" size body if you want "warm".
Members daddyO Posted March 19, 2005 Members Posted March 19, 2005 For under $1,500, I'd say Larrivee is the best guitar going. All solid wood. I'd recommend any of the 03Rs. Since you want a cutaway, I'd start with either a LV-03Re or a DV-03Re. The L is the Larrivee body style which is smaller than a dread but slightly larger than a OM. The D is a dreadnaught. I also recommend the OMV-03Re. It has the OM body which is slighlt more comfy seated for fingerstyle. I think the L body is the most versatile. I own a L-03R which I love. You might find a 9 seies used for under $1500.
Members solitaire Posted March 20, 2005 Members Posted March 20, 2005 Perhaps an Asian Guild or a Tacoma added to the suggestions above? Even post-Fender instruments are high value. I'd suggest the used market too. Lots of bargains out there. I'd definately recommend eBay, with reservation considered to the con-men out there - Paypal is key. Won a truely fine guitar for $1200 new, on eBay a while ago. Rosewood body for warmth (generally) - no matter tonewood: Gibson or Guild for mellownes; Larrivee or Morgan (or what else Canadian) for depth.Haven't actually tried one, but an all-mahogany could be one way to go.
