Members Mongoloid Posted March 28, 2005 Members Posted March 28, 2005 I am looking at buying a classical guitar, anywhere between 1 and 2 grand... been checking e-bay, and this one caught my eye. Ebony guitar Anyone play one of these? It sure is pretty, but I wonder what it sounds like. Oh and anyone have any expierience with the luthier?
Members greystoke 2 Posted March 28, 2005 Members Posted March 28, 2005 I suppose that ebony could come in many guises[light/contrasting figure] etc. since I'm no wood expert, But images posted really resemble rosewood- sides/back, and as for the "solid" statement, pics clearly show 'inserts' on sides. But it's a gorgeus looking inst. Try looking up name of luthier under the several Guilds that are indications/info of small builders reputations. I could have saved time and headache on a 'dog' by a beginner if I had done that simple chore. Greystoke:cool:
Members Macartie Posted March 28, 2005 Members Posted March 28, 2005 It looks like Macassar ebony. This is a different species than the ebony used for fretboards and bridges. Macassar ebony can be used as a tonewood; "regular" ebony is too dense to be very interesting as a tonewood.

I've heard a Macassar Ebony guitar played once and it clocked in around Cherry and Flamed Maple, even with some RW warmth in it (could be the mic or P/U).
Members bjorn-fjord Posted March 28, 2005 Members Posted March 28, 2005 Yeah it's Macassar ebony which is from India and SE asia rather than the pure black ebony which is from Africa. Macassar is a little less brittle than African and has been used quite extensively as a tonewood. Breedlove uses it on some of their ultra high-end models.
