Members benscully Posted April 6, 2005 Members Posted April 6, 2005 Okay... My sunrise pup is on the way to be installed in my 1974 Gibson Blue Ridge. I would like a mic to install with it or something along those lines. I've seen this accu_stics bouncing around although the reviews are extremely mixed. This is a totally live thing it needs to be reliable and low feedback. I'm a soloist so it's all about having a big round sound. i know the sunrise will give me the bass response but i want something for the natural sound of my guitar and the resonance. any advice is going to be so appreciated

They offer a soundhole-mounted internal condenser mic (S3G) and a clip-on external condenser mic (S15G) that sound like high-end studio mics, whether live or recorded. Indeed, Pat Matheny did an entire album using an AMT mic. Street price for either mic should be around $425-$450, unless you can find a used one.
Members RainsongDR1000 Posted April 6, 2005 Members Posted April 6, 2005 If you are set on using an internal condensor, the Joe Mills has gotten good reviews. I think Sdelsolray uses one and he only uses the best stuff, judging by his acoustic rig.

The two sources can compliment each other well and handle a variety of styles and playing techniques. Depending on the setup, an internal mic will present some feedback issues, which are not too hard to mitigate or eliminate. Regarding internal mics, the Joe Mills is nice (it's actually a repackaged Sony electret condenser element), as is the AKG 416B. Both of these mics require bias (or "T") power to the mic in the 6v to 15v range. It is akin to phantom power but different. If you want to go truly high end with an internal mic consider the DPA 4061 (and siblings). It requires true 48v pahontom and balanced cabling. In order to use an internal mic with a second source, such as the Sunrise, you will need to have a preamp and eq circuitry that handles the situation. This requires two separate input channels and two separate eq circuits before any blending of the two separate signals occurs. Don't scrimp here, or you simply won't have the tools to get the blended sound you're looking for. The Rane AP-13 and Raven Labs PMB I or PMB II are excellent pre/eq units, with quite a bit of other functionality for gigging work and, to some extent, for studio purposes. They provide bias power (but do not provide true phantom power). The Pendulum SPS-1 remains (even after 12 years) the premier acoustic guitar preamp. Besides it's functionality live or in the studio, the sound it produces is very musical and euphonic. The SPS-1 provides both bias power and true 48v phantom power, depending on your needs. Another possible option is to add a Fishman Aura to your Sunrise. The jury is out on how well the Aura will work with magnetic pickups. Many really like what it does with UST pickups, and in my limited use of an Aura, it certainly improves the sound of a UST. Dunno about mags though. Hope this helps.
