Members Bajazz Posted April 13, 2005 Members Posted April 13, 2005 I am doing some gigs outdoors this summer, 100% acoustic. Problem is my voice tends to drown the guitars I have. Are there any really loud acoustics out there?
Members solitaire Posted April 13, 2005 Members Posted April 13, 2005 Genre, Style? Any tonewood guidelines/ preferences? What's your vocal range? Since I'm a Swede and we're on this side of the Atlantic, could you give me a max price in NoK (you know, with VAT and stuff included)? - that would really help. Cheers! Edit: What do you play now?
Members knockwood Posted April 13, 2005 Members Posted April 13, 2005 The loudest acoustic I've ever heard in my life is my Guild DV-52 (spruce/rosewood). The thing wants to be heard and can get away from you if you're not careful. It also has fantastic tone and is wonderfully responsive to whatever nuance you apply. The model is discontinued but can be found on ebay from time to time for around $800 used. The Chinese-made Guild GAD-50 has essentially the same construction, with the only apparent differences in the GAD-50's rosewood fingerboard and bridge vs. ebony for the DV-52. I would imagine they are quite similar in play, although I've never had the opportunity to try out a GAD-50. They retail for about $675 including HSC.

Never played one of these, but I know Guilds are nice and mellow sounding guitars. I hear they aren't that bad. Isn't there a GAD-40 with Mahogany body (for a more woody flavour) too?; priced just below the 50 at my retailer.
Members JasmineTea Posted April 13, 2005 Members Posted April 13, 2005 Just played a D-16R today that was LOUD.
Members Guitar Adoptions Posted April 13, 2005 Members Posted April 13, 2005 No question, a Larrivee D-03R with Mediums!
Members PapaTom1 Posted April 14, 2005 Members Posted April 14, 2005 I played a D03R today that was incredibly loud. If I had the 1K that it cost I would have bought it on the spot.

I play a Variax Acoustic 700 now, not very loud for unplugged... I also have a Washburn D34sce Augusta. Not very loud, my wife's Fender DG-5 is louder. I play cover tunes, Beatles, Stones, folk, rock, blues and some hard rock etc... I want heavy bass, but also some high end, as I play a lot of licks and solo stuff in between etc... My vocal range is from somewhat below bass-low C to sopranos high C. (lowest C-C#-D-D# is seldom used)
Members Singin' Dave Posted April 14, 2005 Members Posted April 14, 2005 You're seeing a trend here that a dreadnought guitar will probably be the loudest, boomiest guitar for your needs. I would agree (though some other factors can play a role here). Being in Norway, I'm not sure what you can get, but there's no question that a Martin would be a great choice. However, like most things, the same model can vary from guitar to guitar, so I would definately play as many as you can and pick out the one that speaks to you. Good Luck!
Members PowerTube Posted April 14, 2005 Members Posted April 14, 2005 I would recommend a Kona K2 Thinbody..... ...through a wall of Marshall stacks! :D :D
Members fingerstyleman Posted April 14, 2005 Members Posted April 14, 2005 Are you playing flat pick or fingerstyle, the style of play would certainly have a bearing on any reccommendation.

Mostly pick, but I do some hybrid picking + fingerpick on "Tears in heaven"
Members Flapz Posted April 15, 2005 Members Posted April 15, 2005 Outside? Loud? I can't say enough about a CA Bluegrass! 'bout 1300.00 YES carbon fiber... YES the tone is amazin'! Will stand up to MUCH abuse. An Allison Crouse picker uses one and luvs it.
