Members gusfinley Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 Hi, I'm working on a 70's or so "grenada" dreadnaught style guitar - it sounds great..... the only problem is that a few of the inlays are lifting off the fretboard.... I'm assuming that this is something that I can fix myslef, a clamp and some glue ought to get the job done... what kind of glue would be best for this sort of thing, and are there any suggestions for a procedure to make sure they will stay down and that everything will fell great after the repair? thanks for any help.........
Members DeanBCR Posted April 18, 2005 Members Posted April 18, 2005 Use Stew-Mac #10 Cyanoacrylate, wax paper, and the nitromethane remover from Stew-Mac. Get some of the "pipette" adhesive dispensers as well. Get ALL your clamps READY and adjusted for each area on the neck you wish to "level the inlays" Wrap the wax paper three thicknesses over a small block of wood radiused to the fingerboard curvature that fits into the fret area of the offending inlays. Practice how quickly you can get the wax paper/caul block into place and clamp. Go quickly, ala 10 seconds. Suck up a bit of the #10 into the pipette dispenser and squeeze it along the edges of the offending inlays and clamp FAST. The capillary action of the #10 will cause it to run into the inlay/wood gap. CLAMP and let sit for an hour. Remove the clamp/wax paper/caul rig and clean up the {censored} that remains stuck to the fb/inlay area with the nitromethane CA remover and a small bit of cloth. Ta-daa!
Members gusfinley Posted April 18, 2005 Author Members Posted April 18, 2005 this isn't my guitar, so I don't know how much my firiend would be willing to put into it..... is there a way to do this well with "common household items?"
Members DeanBCR Posted April 19, 2005 Members Posted April 19, 2005 OK... Get the lowest viscosity CA (Krazy glue) from your local hardware store and run a little along the inlay edges. Take the plastic handle end of a screwdriver and press the inlays flush with the FB. Be sure to apply the pressure to the inlay where there is no glue (for obvious reasons). Hold for at least 5 mins. That is the "quickie way" Should work fine.
