Members LesterP Posted April 24, 2005 Members Posted April 24, 2005 After a 2 hour drive to Guitar Adoptions in Wonder Lake, IL, I have to say, I came home 5 hours later with something to really cherish. I went to see Dave's war chest of Larry's and I was sunk from the second I walked in the door to his studio. After a while of showing me his stash, he showed me his ad in Vintage Guitar magazine; it was a sunburst that had 'yikes' written all over it. After asking him what model it was he told me to wait a sec., and came back with a 000-50 that sprang me right off of the leather couch I was sinking into as his lovely wife was pushing ungodly delicious chicken barbeque at me. I resisted the barbeque but was having a difficult time resisting the guitar. Dave had the patience of a saint, he must have showed me at least 10 guitars, one by one. I bit on the 000, my first Larry! The slotted headstock, handpainted tobacco burst, and all of that mahogany took me by storm. It was simply a work of art and rang out perfectly. I had bought an SCGC from Dave before so was not worried one bit about anything. He is polished and extremely professional, with some good stories to boot. It was setup to perfection, just like the SCGC, without needing a tweak, and off to the races I went in excitement. Then I gave into the barbeque to help ease the crunch on my wallet. Dave and his wife made me chow down before the long journey back and by the time I left, I was one happy camper. Just took some pics for y'all to see tonite after work and here they are... Thanks to Dave and Company for my best ever guitar buying experience to date! I haven't put it down since I got home that night!

I plum forgot. I should've just posted it at the Larrivee forum, and not the AGF and APM forums too; you're so right, this is way OCD and a definite infraction. My apologies. Next time, I'll consult with the IIGB to determine the limit be4 I post or just post at the Beginner's forum and leave it at that. If I played better, I'd be practicing and not posting as much!
Members kwakatak Posted April 24, 2005 Members Posted April 24, 2005 OK - how about a positive post then? That is a sweet guitar and I can't believe that the Jean Sr., the owner of the company himself got in the spray booth to do that beautiful sunburst! I'm sure it plays like a dream though I know I couldn't deal with the temptation. Speaking of temptation, I'm also glad that you had such a wonderful experience finding it! I've seen Dave's many tempting posts so I know that he is evil () but I've also heard that he has the patience of a saint and is a joy to do business with. It sounds like a ++ to me! Congratulations! I'm sure we'd all love to hear how it sounds as well, but for now the pictures will do. Don't worry about sending donuts over here, though. I'll just leave 'em a bag of stale hamburger buns!
Members Tralfaz Posted April 24, 2005 Members Posted April 24, 2005 Sweet guitar. But in that first pic, the dog looks kinda depressed about the whole situation.

Members kwakatak Posted April 25, 2005 Members Posted April 25, 2005 They opened a new factory in El Cajon, CA or somewhere thereabouts a couple of years ago. That's their primary plant now where they make all their gloss-finished guitars - (05 series and above). Most of the family moved down their and are still actively involved in the production. The Vancouver factory is still in operation and that's where they make all their satin-finish guitars (03 series). I don't know if the switch was in some way because of the fire they had in the finishing section of the Vancouver factory several years ago?
Members wigginsplayer Posted April 25, 2005 Members Posted April 25, 2005 ENJOY! That is one beautiful guitar. And, for my part, post it in as many places as you wish. I surely would! Pete

Members Singin' Dave Posted April 26, 2005 Members Posted April 26, 2005 Perhaps 2-3 years ago, I visited Dave at his old place near Woodfield Mall to buy an Ultrasound 50w amp and was taken with his passion for guitars and how nice he was. He pulled out all sorts of stunning acoustics, G&L electrics etc. and had me seriously jonesing for a new guitar in about 10 minutes flat.... Dave was super patient with me as I plugged in my Martin and tested the amp--but man, he kept going down to his basement and pulling out more eye candy.....You could just see how excited about his stock he was, but man, he was killing me!! Fortunately, due to the fact that I visited him in the mid afternoon, there was no BBQ around to tempt me to stay further. I grabbed the Ultrasound and beat it out of there before I seriously damaged junior's college fund. Great guy and a fun experience...
