Members Mistersuperfly Posted April 28, 2005 Members Posted April 28, 2005 Well hello! I was just wondering if this is as good of a deal as I think it is. My local shop owner is selling his personal guitars off for some reason, I guess he's cleaning house. He has one beauty of a prototype 50's Gretsch (it has trestle bracing, perfect condition) Was certified by a Fender rep to be a prototype of the original model (can't remember the name, single filtertron pu, bigsby). Anyways, he want's 2500$ for it!!! I think he's gone nuts. He also had another one of his axes. A gibson classical. I am normally not one for classical guitars, but for some reason I liked this one. I looked around on it and realized it was made in 1971, and was in good condition (finish worn a bit, but nothing through the wood, neck was straight, tuners worked) I looked closer and realized the back and sides were solid Brazilian Rosewood! No wonder I liked this more than the other ones on the wall. So I'm sitting here holding this 71' Made in Kalamazoo Gibby, with Brazilian rosewood back and sides, nicely worn finish, It played great and sounded better than all of the other classicals on the wall. I noticed he had a price of 499$ on it, and almost died. Am I just crazy or is that a heck of a deal? Should I jump on it due to the likely event that I will be taking classical lessons in the next 2 years?

Members guitarcapo Posted April 28, 2005 Members Posted April 28, 2005 Yea. What his address? I have a good mind to go down there myself and throttle him for his crazy prices. Just because some guitar is made by some comapny called Gibson and is made of some wood that's nearly extinct, doesn't mean you should be charging top of the line Agile prices.

Gibson (and for that matter, Martin) classicals are not well thought of by classical musicians, but I see 'em in the hands of folkies, rockers and country musicians often. $500 for one w/ Braz. RW b/s sounds like an absolute steal!
