Members telenate Posted May 13, 2005 Members Posted May 13, 2005 I haven't touched my electric in over a year and today I picked it up. Arrrrrgh! I can't play the darn thing (it's a Tele) 'cept for very light rythms. So the question is: How does someone who has apparently programmed himself to play acoustic switch back to some electric playing without sounding like DRECK?! Any pointers here would be appreciated.
Members Samari Posted May 13, 2005 Members Posted May 13, 2005 Use thicker strings. I had the same problem and went from 9's to 11's and helped a lot. Still had an adjustment period. Funny really after I changed I havent gone back! *edit* - Oh yeah, had to setup the guitar again after the string change.
Members digitalsnipe Posted May 13, 2005 Members Posted May 13, 2005 Loose the rigidity. I know what you mean. Acoustic playing developes a certain stiffness in the left hand, and mindset to maintain that stiffness, and it's hard to "let go". You find yourself grabbing at the frets on the electric instead of touching and moving fluidly. It's a mindset mostly for me. I try to ease up on the fret hand by lightly chording and doing the same for scales and the touch slowly comes back. It sort of seems like an exercise in relaxing from the waste up. The best thing to do is never leave one guitar for the other for long periods.
