Members digitalsnipe Posted May 9, 2005 Members Posted May 9, 2005 Been trying to get used to this Walden (1-11/16 thin neck) so I could post a clip of it. Turns out it seems a bit in the background in the song. Pardon the finger-stumbles. It really is a sweet-sounding, albeit quiet, guitar. Needs a setup. Haven't had it long and I need to get back to the shop for tweaking. Can't adjust the vocals down as the song is one track that I recorded this morning. When I get the guitar set up I will post it on Tioga_Man's new sticky. The song is called Long Silent Heart. www.soundclick.com/bands/9/digitalsnipemusic.htm
Members JasmineTea Posted May 9, 2005 Members Posted May 9, 2005 I've been trying to form an opinion for this recording, I must've listened five times. I think the style is throwing me off. It's nice, but not the kind of thing I listen to or play.
Members digitalsnipe Posted May 9, 2005 Author Members Posted May 9, 2005 Yea, I wrote it 2 nights ago and recorded it yesterday morning. Rushed it a bit. I should have taken more time in development but, patience is not one of my virtues. The song was more of an experiment in fingerstyle than anything else I think. I seldom use full chords and this particular piece did not lend itself to carrying a base line throughout because the "chords" were difficult to play as it is. If you can put your finger on what you see needs resolving I would like to know. The actual lyric was just something we've all experienced before so it was an easy lashup to put with the instrumental. Thanks for giving it a listen. I like the site it is on because there's none of the buffereing to wait for. And, it's free.
Members JasmineTea Posted May 9, 2005 Members Posted May 9, 2005 End of the first chorus it goes G, A, B. If you could sneak an E in there after the B, before going to the Csharp it would resolve better, and send it back into the verse better... At least that's what I'm hearing.
Members UGB Posted May 9, 2005 Members Posted May 9, 2005 Impressive. I wish I could play like that. The vocals match the music very well.

You nailed the chords down but I'm trying to shoehorn the E to resolve the change where you hear it. Haven't picked up the guitar to actually try it yet. I'll try anything once. And, yes, I am free. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UGB - Thanks for the listen and positive comments. Actually, I am trying to "break away" from traditional fingerstyles. Troubling part is, to do that and not use a lyrically competitive instrumental that overpowers simply for the sake of being unique. That becomes counter-productive and, at least to the springboard of experience plying this forum, quite noticeably so.
Members JasmineTea Posted May 10, 2005 Members Posted May 10, 2005 Here's the shoe horn I hear, and this is only a suggestion: Anyway, I can't believe I'm makeing suggestions like this. I'm not very good at recieving them from others.
Members digitalsnipe Posted May 10, 2005 Author Members Posted May 10, 2005 Originally posted by JasmineTea Here's the shoe horn I hear, and this is only a suggestion: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Your suggestion is not just some arbitrary statement posted for the sake of posting it (hearing yourself talk), nor do I take it that way. But, the posting of a song is just that, albeit in musical fashion. It's really reducible to just an expression of musical opinion usually attended with the (unnecessary) excess baggage of defensiveness. I travel light in that regard. Sticks and stones... Probably the biggest let-down I can think of is no response at all. Some people really put a lot of themselves into a piece and then with hearts pounding tenuously hang it out there, with their hopes for a better tomorrow, based on responses. That's ridiculous. So, JasmineTea, I will try your suggestion. If I can make it work I will repost the song a la JT. On another note...just what style do you subscribe to? This particular song is just one style for me. I have other music/songs that I find interesting and play often.
Members KATMAN Posted May 11, 2005 Members Posted May 11, 2005 I find that sound kind of soothing really. Kind of a Celtic sound ,at least to my ears anyway. Your voice matches the playing, that says a lot. Walden guitars are kind sleepers, not too many play them, they sound great in my opinion, your song too.

Quiet guitar. That nails it doesn't it? I never thought of it that way. Purely coincidence on my part. The Walden definitely is a sleeper. I normally use fingernails and the side of my thumb but on this guitar I have to use a thumbpick to get the base to respond. Standard dread body, solid S. African mohogany B/S with solid Sitka spruce top, traditional pre-war internal structure and yet I have to dig to get it to talk. I bought the thing from a luthier/distributor and played it in his empty basement. Should have taken it upstairs to his livingroom and played it there. It sounds great but it asks a little more from the player to get it there. That said, I'm going to take it back for a setup including a nut change to maximize string separation and minimize height. Perhaps a different saddle material will help with volume. Thanks for the positive comments, especially the Celtic part. I love Celtic music though I wasn't striving for it here.
