Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 17, 2005 Members Posted May 17, 2005 Ok a local shop is having a sale this saturday, and there is one guitar is question: the Ovation Celebrity CK047-5F. I've wanted an ovation for quite some time and the price is right. It's going to be 250, when they normally sell 499-515. It's a mid-depth bowl and I find it fits comfortably even when sitting (I'm always told you can't play them sitting, I have no problem with it.) I think it have a very respectable sound unpluged that even completes with my Harmony (a good harmony, believe it?). It has has a nice rich sound, and the few mins I played it pluged in I was pretty floored. I just didn't have the time today. The action is almost as low as my paul, vvveerry comfortable for an acoustic. Pretty decently fast neck for an acoustic. It supposedly has a mahogony neck, but it's got a thick finish that I can't tell, I thought it was carbon fiber. The sales man said it was wood though. It doesn't specify on their site. This is not one of there high quality modles, but I assume it's a bit better than their low level Celebrity C01 or whatever the model number is. The finish is 'ok'. Black sparkle is not my favorite as I would much rather have natural, but I guess it's different. And I can live with it much better seeing as the headstock actually matches the body finish. Built in tuner, that to my ears, did a pretty good job. One thing I want to know is can I use it with my amp? I have a Laney AOR 50. It cleans up fairly nicely I think and I just want it to get my by for awhile. But if it can't do the job I suppose I can drop 300 on a decent acoustic amp, I hear Crate is good? Contradicting their electric guitar amps I suppose? But if the Laney can do well, I can save that money for my recording system as my computer fried a few months ago . What are your guys oppinoins on this model? I have looked in the review section and there is nada. Thanks! Dylan
Members Jerry NT Posted May 17, 2005 Members Posted May 17, 2005 Most places will allow you to take your amp in and try it with the guitar. You can check the prices sometimes on ebay. Type in your model number and do a search. That'll give you an idea how well it is priced (Don't forget to add shipping and subtract state sales tax.) You can also look up this instrument on the guitar database on this site and see what others paid for it. That is the most reliable info you can get on the database, the rest of it is opinions.
Members guit30 Posted May 17, 2005 Members Posted May 17, 2005 Ovation invented piezo pickups and were the big thing for years til Takemines(same company(Kaman) and Taylor acoustic-electrics became popular. If you like it, sounds like a deal ,get it, you could get an acoustic DI like the LR Baggs box and run it thru your regular amp and it would sound more acousticJim
Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 18, 2005 Author Members Posted May 18, 2005 Can't bring my amp in, It's a head and a pretty sizeable 2/12 cab.
Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 18, 2005 Author Members Posted May 18, 2005 And one last question, do ovations come with cases? I know this shop is notorious for this kinda dealing, seperating the case and guitar and I know they are trying to sell the case for this guitar at 105.
Members KATMAN Posted May 19, 2005 Members Posted May 19, 2005 Most deals like that are pretty common, but even at $355 w/case don't seem that bad of deal, unless you can come up with a cheaper case.Since it being a Ovation, you won't find too many cases lying around.
Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 20, 2005 Author Members Posted May 20, 2005 I did a search and found most of the reason they're not well liked, and most seemed superficial, but that's just me. Yeah the case issue, they seperate them, but I'll just tell him "Since ovations are sold with the cases and you seperated them and sell them at the same price, you can add the 20-30 dollars or you'll never see my buisness again... just ring up my name and see the profit you've made on me alone." I can't even recall how much of my earnings I've droped there, probably more than I care to admit, but I will get that freakin' case.
Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 22, 2005 Author Members Posted May 22, 2005 I couldn't get the case . I'll just start looking ebay for a used one. It's a good guitar, I'm pretty happy with it. But I wasn't going to spend 110 on a {censored}in' case when the guitar was only 250. I'll upload pics and a review later. I think It's prety good, runs though the laney alright. But I will have to get an acoustic amp, just different character with tubes and it distorts to fast.
Members KATMAN Posted May 22, 2005 Members Posted May 22, 2005 You might be able to get a SKB(?) case at a Guitar Center or Musician's Friend for considerably less. I got one like this several years ago at a local music store, but I would get a case for it.
Members RainDownMyBlues Posted May 23, 2005 Author Members Posted May 23, 2005 Does SKB make a case to fit the curved back of the ovation single cutaway's?
