I've never played one of these... i don't think martin makes them anymore... the entire 15 line is, as i understand it, completely mahogany guitars. MF may just be blowing out their stock... if you can find one local to try, and you like it... jump on it

Thanks for the info.. but I actually called Musicians Friend and they said they are still scheduled to receive shipments of these into August.

They also said these are made specially for Musicians Friend.. so I certainly have gone out and tried other rosewood/spruce Martins, but I doubt I'll find that exact model.

Still.. it might be worth taking the chance.

Any other reason for the cheap price you could see??

Oh.. and another note that makes this all the more strange... This model is not anywhere to be found on Martin's web site.

The reason you can't find it on the Martin website is because it is a model made specifically for Musicians Friend. It is actually a D-15 LE, (limited edition). The standard D-15 is an all mahogony model, or sapele in the later models. The model # can be confusing since it is not mahogony, but rather spruce/rosewood.

Makes one wonder if it should carry the D-15 name at all.

It's a fantastic guitar, and not just for the money. I've had mine for 9 months.

It's very "plain jane" looking, but with some Meguire's polish/wax it gets a bit of a semi-gloss to it, like it's been played for a few years.

It has the 15 series bracing and is very light and very responsive. It doesn't say that it's a 15 on the neck block, it just says "Custom."

The sounds that come out of it are just incredible, with great overtones, and you can't beat that rosewood smell.

The bracing is a bit different and it's missing some binding/ ornamentation...But personally I like the tone of that bracing. A bit firmer high end without sacrificing bass.

well one thing to keep in mind, if its made for MF, then the 'list price' they show is irrelevant... in my opinion... for the money i would probably buy the 'other' D-15... or one of the other 15s.

I've been pretty obsessed with the 15s for a month or so... so take my advice with a grain of salt.

A solid body spruce and rosewood US made Martin for $800.00 with case. Man, how could you go wrong! You could also check out the D16GT or D16RGT which are good too (although I traded my D16GT in on a D-28) and around the same price (except at Musicians friend) check out Elderly.com.

If you look hard enough, you can find dealers getting rid of LArrivee D-03 rosewood models for $800. Between the Martin and the LArrivee, which would everyone recommend overall?

Overall it would depend on the individual playing the guitar, and how / where / why they intend to play it. If you want the prototypical bluegrass sound, you may prefer the Martin. If you like a balanced sound that is very versatile, you may prefer the Larrivee. If you want to impress your friends with the name on a headstock, you may want the Martin. Or maybe your friends like Larrivees.

In my personal tone quest about a year ago, the Larrivee was the guitar that said "BUY ME"! But your mileage may vary. If you do decide on the Larrivee, I can steer you to a very good place to get it.

Ya'know, if they did that it'd be in direct competition with the Larry OM-03R.

It'd probly sell like hot-cakes.
