Why do I always go to a G chord when I first pick up a guitar? Does anyone else do this? It's like some kind of bad habit or something. How do I break myself of it or do I even need to?

'G' is about the happiest chord on the guitar, I don't religiously avoid it or anything but, when I first pick up the guitar I almost always do a first position pull off run ending up on E minor chord.

It's really simple I know, but if anyone happens to be listening
(who doesn't play, that is), it sounds pretty impressive, almost like I know what I'm doing. I've fooled a few people with that!

of course any 1st year student can see right through that!

I often play a G chord when I first pick up a guitar because, to my ears, it's the best chord for hearing whether or not the guitar is in tune. It's also a good chord for judging the "balance" of a guitar you're picking up for the first time because the lowest note and the highest note are the same.

Everything should be in G major.
I think it's the best key.
Second would be C major.
When I was a kid I could play in any key no problem.
Now that I'm older, I have a hard time "seeing" flat/sharp keys.

I think that 'G' and 'A' are the most versatile keys. You can play down the fretboard and throw in an open string on purpose or by accident and it sounds good.

I prefer D too, but it doesn't affect me like it does you. It makes me feel more upbeat, unless I drop the low E string to D or tune to DADGAD. Then I can see it being darker and moodier.

My next favorite key is E major. I just love the sound of the Eadd9 chord for some reason.

I usually strum a G and an E on an acoustic when I first pick it up. I guess it's because they have more open strings in them than any other open major chords and give a good guide to the natural sound of the guitar.

This a great thread. I never gave it any thought before. I picked up my guitar to see. I always play a D chord when I first pick up the guitar. The funny thing is it isn't always D major. The type of D chord I play depends on my mood. My favorite key to play in is D, closely followed by A.

I'll go to "E" evertime and like y'all I don't know why. Maybe because all the strings are used and three are open but G is the same way. When I put the final check on the tuning I always use the "E" . I can just hear whether the guitar is in tune if the E sounds good.
