Members matt1801 Posted July 5, 2005 Members Posted July 5, 2005 I'm thinking of getting this guitar from ebay. Japanese Epiphone Acoustic What kind of quality/sound are we talking about here? What year was it made? What do they typically go for? Is it a full size guitar? Thanks!
Members guit30 Posted July 6, 2005 Members Posted July 6, 2005 Looks Nice, probably all laminate. I am looking at a 1970 Japanese Epiphone student size guitar for 99. It has a blem on back, sort of a fade in wood. I wouldn't expect a miracle, because you haven't seen it, can you return it. 70's Japanese acoustics were niceJim
Members 54merk Posted July 6, 2005 Members Posted July 6, 2005 It's quite difficult to determine exactly what year this was made, other than sometime between in the 70's. I believe production was switched to Korea after '79. These were inexpensive laminate guitars, which sold in the low $100's back when they were new. Not bad instruments at all, but much lower quality than the US built Epis, and IMO not even among the best Japanese produced guitars of that era. The guitar looks rather dinged up, but as with any instrument of this age, it may need quite a bit of work to make it playable. There is no mention in the listing of how it plays, whether the neck has been reset, or the frets have been replaced. This guitar is somewhere between 26 and 35 years old, so it may need more work than it's worth. You can ask the seller about the action, and have them place a ruler across the frets pointing down to the bridge and send you a photo. If the ruler points into the top rather than straight to the bridge, it needs a neck reset. But, if the bidding does not get out of hand, it may be worth a gamble. When buying any used guitar on ebay, or anywhere on the web, make sure that there is a full return policy.
Members guit30 Posted July 7, 2005 Members Posted July 7, 2005 The Student sized Epiphone that was made in the 70's in Japan is very nice looking. What kind of rep did 70's Japanese Epiphones have?Jim
Members guit30 Posted July 8, 2005 Members Posted July 8, 2005 After a closer look this guitar looks like it needs a major neck reset, the saddle is already lo as it can go and I'm guessing it has had it's neck adjusted as best as possible, this is more like a 65 than a 70 and may be a USA made, the salesman told me it was Japanese, not for me $99Jim
