Members LesPaul1984 Posted July 12, 2005 Members Posted July 12, 2005 Ok, so I have been playing a ep les paul on steroids (replaced all accesories and pickups) for 10 years with a classic 30 amp. I get such rich tones that sounds like a 5 thousand dollar setup. I just got back from a trip where I played on my friends telecoustic electric acoustic guitar. It was really fun to play, and easy too. I am looking for something a little nicer that I can really play on, its not big, and the strings are easier to play than a standard acoustic. My specialty is lead guitar, mostly soloing, so I need something that wont tire me out midway through a song. Help guys! My price range is between 300-800. What do ya think?
Members UGB Posted July 12, 2005 Members Posted July 12, 2005 I think you really need a hybrid instrument like a Wendler ElectroCoustic www.electrocoustic.com or something like a Carvin AE 185 www.carvin.com . You're not really going to find a pure acoustic guitar that you can play electric style lead guitar on imho.
Members LesPaul1984 Posted July 12, 2005 Author Members Posted July 12, 2005 Well Its not the electric function that I need so much. I want it to be a small "mess around" guitar. I mean it doesnt have to have a perfect tone, it just has to be super fun to play. Along the lines of a stratocoustic. Got any ideas? Do the hybrids sound loud enough when unplugged?
Members UGB Posted July 12, 2005 Members Posted July 12, 2005 Consider a parlor sized guitar like an Art & Lutherie Ami or even something like a Baby Taylor.
Members guit30 Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 Get an Alvarez artist series, almost same type neck as Les Paul and great quality Solid top guitar for your rangeJim
Members LesPaul1984 Posted July 13, 2005 Author Members Posted July 13, 2005 the alvarez looks perfect... TOo bad no local stores carry it. I guess I just have to go to the store and play it all!
Members guit30 Posted July 13, 2005 Members Posted July 13, 2005 You live in Philly, Deluca's in Hatboro has several Alvarezes plus a used AD60S that I just traded in for a new AlvarezJim
Members guitarNed Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 I totally second the Alvarez Artist series. At the very least, give yourself the chance to play one. I came to acoustics via electrics, same as you, and the Alvarez made it easier. No acoustic is ever as easy to play as a decent electric, but the Alvarez is inexpensive and good quality, and the necks are especially nice if you are an electric player. Plus the electronics are extremely superior, really really good. In fact, the newest Artists have electronics that actually provide phantom power to a secondary condensor mic in the body of the guitar if you choose to get one. Or it will support any other type of second pickup, with controls on the panel for volume. Built in tuner as well!
Members LesPaul1984 Posted July 14, 2005 Author Members Posted July 14, 2005 Ok- I will def take a look at the alvarez artist series- I see that there are over 22 different types of artist series. ANy recomendations or knowledge given the substantial number of models? THanks so much
Members LesPaul1984 Posted July 14, 2005 Author Members Posted July 14, 2005 GO to http://www.alvarezgtr.com/ and check out these two guitars: AF60CK and the AD90SCK. I love these, what do you think?
Members strummilo Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 Man those are some nice looking guitars. I'm diggin the 60. One picky question, there doesn't appear to be any inlays on the fingerboard (except 12th fret), is this common with Alvarez? And does it matter to you? I need 'em.
Members kwakatak Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 I'd say of the two go with the folk-size AF60CK. OT for anyone to answer: I see that the two guitars are made of "figured dao" on the top, back & sides. What kind of wood is that? Is it similar to mahogany? If so, would it have the same tonal properties of other mahogany-topped guitars like the Martin 15 series? If that's the case, LesPaul1984 - have you considered trying a Martin 15 series - either an OM or 000 model? They go for about $800 or so but I imagine they can be found for a little less. I've tried a few but never thought of playing lead on them, though.
Members guit30 Posted July 15, 2005 Members Posted July 15, 2005 You seem to want a cutaway electric more than a regular guitar. You should try a regular dreadnaught like an AD60S. When you buy laminate sides or back, always get mahogany, you are only paying for a finish, the plywood is the same.Jim
