Just got an Alvarez RD8, which has a slim thin neck, they can't get it setup right. One reason I found out that one guy they have, the only thing he knows about set ups is adjusting the neck (Bad), they are going to send it out to a Luthier to set it up.

Any reason that guitar sholud be hard to set up , radius?

No.

Should be ok as long as the luthier is a good one. Some guitars require more than a tweek of the truss, or a little sanding of the saddle.

Check his credentials if you can. Ask around.

Can you bring it to the luthier shop yourself? If so, you can tell him how you'd like it set-up, how close of action by the nut -vs- the 12th frett, etc.

Don't trust your guitar with a hack. Get his ph# and call him.

Get your guitar back right now, and bring it in to someone who knows something. Who knows who they're sending it out to!

Bring it into Medley Music when Larry is in. He'll be able to troubleshoot stuff and if need be, can send it off to David Dougherty, Medley's main repair dude.

BTW - When you say they can't set it up right, what's wrong with the setup? I thought you were in love with this guitar? Is the action at the nut too high, is the neck angle off? Neck relief?

Here is the deal, When I first played the guitar I liked it, but I wanted extra light strings put on it and the action lowered. The first time I got it back, it looked like all that this guy did was change the strings. I called my salesman Rick and he said bring it back, I asked the tech to lower the action as lo as possible without any fret buzz. I went to pick it up and the guy had a real attitude. He said that guitar was set up like an electric, what do you want, I don't like to mess with the saddle.(Right away, I knew he was a screw ball, all he knows how to do is change strings and adjust the neck, a lot more to a set up than that. )

Took it home, he had totally taken all of the relief out of the neck, the action was lo, but the higher frets didn't sustain well and it was out of balance.

Called Rick today, He said bring it back(I said, why don't you just give me my other guitar back, he said, please give me one more chance, we have a luthier , David Doyle who comes in and picks up stuff once a week). Rick is a very nice gentleman, probably the only reason I go to Deluca's, plus the great selection of instruments. I wrote a detailed list down of what I wanted done. I wanted some relief back in the neck, I wanted the bass twelve fret around 3/32 and the treble 12 fret around 2/32. I told him what of music that I played and some other things. I don't see any reason why a luthier can't set it up right, the other guy won't touch a guitar of mine again.

Rick has been very good to me, if the luthier can't set it up good, I'll return the RD8 for my AD60S. The RD8 has the thinnest profile neck that I have ever seen and is a very decent instrument . Should work out, the saddle needs to be sanded down some, plus the nut looks like it could use a little tweaking.

Will let you know what happens.

Thanks,

Jim
