The question should be which one would you choose? Although these guitars are in the same price class, they are very different. Are you aware that the 00028EC has a short 24.9" scale. It's easy to play, and string bending is easier because there's less tension on the strings, so you give up some volume. It's also a 000 sized body with a 1.75" nut, essentially a fingerstyle guitar. You are also paying for EC's name. The HD28V is a dreadnaught with the longer 25.4" scale and a 1 11/16" nut. So, do you want a dread or smaller 000 body, short or long scale, narrow or wide nut? Fingerstyle or flat pick or both???

Members egordon99 Posted July 12, 2005 Members Posted July 12, 2005 hmmmm, I'm eating at Morton's tonight (I wish!) Do I want the Porterhouse or the Lobster Tail? Oh, to answer which one I would want, I would pick the HD-28V, as I seem to be lacking a rosewood dread at this juncture in my GAS career. I had a Taylor 710 that I traded in towards the OM/PW. Also, for some reason I don't like the large pickguard on Martin's 000s. If you're looking at the HD28V, you owe it to yourself to check out the Santa Cruz D/PW, yummy! Now pass the melted butter

Members guitarNed Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 I don't like the EC model. If I were gonna get the 000 (I prefer it) then I think I'd get the OM Aura or the OM with the Fishman pro blend thingy with the mic and the piezo. And I'd want a rosewood body. And I'd want to pay $1000 less, which would be easy if I just refuse to buy the EC model. I've always thought the dreadnaughts are unbalanced, with excessive bass. A Martin HD28V is fabulous. But unbalanced. But if you like dreadnaughts, then that's the one to get. It is a corker!
Members 54merk Posted July 14, 2005 Members Posted July 14, 2005 My favorite Martin 000 sized guitar is the OM21. It's a lot less $$ than either of these models, has a 1.75" nut, 25.4" scale, and a rosewood body. Martin does not make enough models with the wider nut, IMO. The OM-21 is a bit spartan in appearance, however Elderly does stock a fancier OM-28 "custom shop" model for a bit more $$. http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/OM28.htm
Members Porkchop Xpress Posted July 25, 2005 Members Posted July 25, 2005 I just picked up an HD-28V and it is great. I think it is a VERY balanced guitar especially for a dread and extremely responsive. I am not disappointed with it at all (I think my Taylor is getting a little jealous though!). There is no fair comparison between the two models IMO. It would be the same as asking if you should buy a Les Paul or a Strat, both are great guitars, but very different.
Members ddlingling Posted July 25, 2005 Members Posted July 25, 2005 it seems you're asking for a preference, not an explanation, so il'l give you mine i'd go 28, though i dont like the vintage necks. if anything i'd pick a standard hd-28 with a low pro neck, since i have smaller hands and my play style requires some widestretched chords. also love the deep sound of the high end hd's like the 28 and a well broken in 35 (i own a hd28lsv myself). i find, however, for some reason, new 35's always sound a little thin, whereas 28's come out of the shop booming. takes a few years for the 35's to break in, though when they do they sound great. my friend bought one a few years ago, and it has opened up very well, it sounds excellent after a few years of play. but all the 28's i've played seem to sound great off the rack. of course, its all subjective. just my .02$
