Kona Acoustic-Electric, defective pickup?

I bought a Kona KG1CEN Acoustic-Electric guitar. It sounds really good when unplugged.

When plugged in, the treble is very bright and the bass is almost non-existant. Raising the bass all the way up and lowering the treble all the way down helps, but still lacks bass.

Do I have a defective pickup or are the Kona guitars just like this?

I have a kona K1E and it sounds fine so you may have some sort of problem. Did you try it on another amp or another guitar on your amp just in case .

Does it have a preamp? Not all A/E do...some are passive, even though they have volume/tone controls.

An easy way to tell is if you don't have a battery inside, it's DEFINITELY passive...if so, plugging your guitar into a preamp'll improve your sound quite a bit, in all probability.

If it's active (has preamp/uses batteries), perhaps you need a good outboard EQ...

HTH :)

You might have poor contact between the saddle and the pickup element (assuming it's an UST).

Who's got a link to the clay shim trick?
